Measures 13cm Plush fake fur Stuffed toy Suitable for ages 3 years & up Junior bird lovers will be thrilled with this RSPB Woodpecker bird toy, realistically recreated using a clever mix of coloured furs to mimic the Woodpecker's natural plumage. The hidden secret that really makes this toy bird however, is the real-life bird call you get when you squeeze the bird's tummy! Amazing! Definitely one to add to your toy collection. Physical Characteristics The Green Headed Woodpecker is the largest of the three woodpeckers that breed in Britain. It has a heavy-looking body, short tail & a strong, long bill. Both sexes are green above & pale yellowish green below, with yellow rump & red crown & nape; the moustache stripe has a red centre in the male but is solid black in the female. The Green Woodpecker measures 30-36 cm in length with a 45-51 cm wingspan. Habitat More than 75% of the range of the Green Woodpecker is in Europe, where it is absent from some northern & eastern parts & from Irel&, Greenland & the Macaronesian Islands, but otherwise distributed widely. Behaviour Green headed Woodpeckers have a distinctive undulating flight. Breeding The nesting hole is larger but similar to those of the other woodpeckers. It may be a few feet above the ground or at the top of a tall tree. There is a single brood of four to six white eggs, measuring 31 x 23 mm & weighing 8.9 g each, of which 7% is shell. After the last egg is laid, they are incubated for 19-20 days by both parents taking shifts of between 1.5 to 2.5 hours. The chicks are naked at hatching & fledge after 21-24 days. Diet The main food of the Green Woodpecker is ants for which it spends much of its time foraging on the ground, though insects are also taken from branches. Strange & Interesting Facts The evolution of the Woodpecker's drilling equipment has provided very sophisticated shock absorbing adaptations involving the way that the bird's beak joins the skull, as if human did a similar motion it would cause serious concussion!
