The adult male Pochard has a long dark bill with a grey b&, a red head & neck, a black breast, red eyes & a grey back. The adult female Pochard has a brown head & body & a narrower grey bill b&. The triangular head shape is distinctive. Habitat In the British Isles, Pochards breed in eastern England & lowland Scotl&, & in small numbers in Northern Irel&, with numbers increasing gradually. Large numbers winter in Great Britain, after retreating from Russia & Scandinavia. Their breeding habitat is marshes & lakes with a metre or more water depth. Behaviour Pochards are gregarious birds, forming large flocks in winter, often mixed with other diving ducks, such as Tufted Duck, which they are known to hybridise with. Breeding Pochards breed in much of temperate & northern Europe into Asia. They are migratory, and winter in the southern & west of Europe. Diet These birds feed mainly by diving or dabbling.
