One name above all others has become associated with walking in the Lake District: A. Wainwright, whose seven-volume Pictorial Guide to the Lakeland Fells, first published in 1955-66, has become the definitive guidebook. Wainwright's meticulously h&-drawn maps, diagrams & drawings take you up the 214 principal hills & mountains of the Lake District, describing the main routes of ascent from different starting points, as well as lesser-known variants, showing the summit viewpoint panoramas & the ridge routes that can be made to create longer walks. The North Western Fells, Book Six of Wainwright's Walking Guide, covers the area between the rivers Derwent & Cocker, bordered by Crummock Water & Buttermere to the west & by Bassenthwaite Lake & Derwent Water to the east. About the author Born in Blackburn in 1907, Alfred Wainwright left school at the age of 13. A holiday at the age of 23 kindled a life-long love affair with the Lake District. Following a move to Kendal in 1941 he began to devote every spare moment he had to researching & compiling the original seven Pictorial Guides. He described these as his 'love letters' to the Lakeland Fells & at the end of the first, The Eastern Fells, he wrote about what the mountains had come to mean to him. A. Wainwright died in 1991 at the age of 84. Clive Hutchby climbed his very first Lakeland fell just two years after the publication of the last of legendary fellwalker & guidebook writer Alfred Wainwright ’s seven Pictorial Guides to the Lakeland Fells, & a full six years before the author relented to ‘pressure’ from his fans & produced his final guide to the mountains of the English Lake District, The Outlying Fells of Lakel&. After conquering Catbells, he has grown taller (and older, unfortunately), & in the intervening years since has edited newspapers in England & the United States & also worked in Irel&. In all three countries he has won journalism awards for writing & designing. Clive is the author of The Wainwright Companion, published in 2012, of which Cumberland News wrote ' No-one has analysed the Pictorial Guidebooks produced by Alfred Wainwright more closely than Clive Hutchby. He's counted the clouds in every book'. ...

About the author Born in Blackburn in 1907, Alfred Wainwright left school at the age of 13. A holiday at the age of 23 kindled a life-long love affair with the Lake District. Wainwright died in 1991 at the age of 84. Chris Jesty trained as a cartographer with the Ordnance Survey. He devised Scafell Pike Panorama, a guide to the view from the highest mountain in Engl&, for which Wainwright provided illustrations. When Wainwright's health deteriorated, Chris helped him with the maps for two of his large-format books. Shortly before he died, Wainwright said that if ever the Pictorial Guides were to be revised, Chris Jesty should be given the job. He lives in Kendal. ...
