The sense of movement, flickering light & lively brushwork of this painting are characteristic of Castello. The long-necked Madonna shows the influence of Parmigianino, & the setting with the column base to the left is reminiscent of the settings in Van Dyck's portraits, many of which could be seen in Castello's native Genoa, where Van Dyck had worked in the early 1620s. The inscription is from the New Testament (John 1: 36), & recalls the words of John the Baptist on recognising Christ as the Messiah. ...

The Virgin And Child With Saint John Print

The painting long carried a false signature of Perugino's on the hem of the Virgin's robe. The work is in fact probably by a close associate and imitator of Perugino. The painting was originally round-topped and it is now displayed with a recreated addition at the top. The Virgin's robe is painted in ultramarine, the most expensive and intense blue pigment and one often reserved for the Virgin's drapery.
