Saint John baptises Jesus Christ in the river Jordan. This is perhaps the end section from a predella panel, supporting pilaster, or flat-fronted pillar. The rest of the altarpiece has not definitely been identified, although it has been suggested that together with scenes from the lives of Saints James & John the Baptist & the Crucifixion (Paris, Louvre) this could have been part of an altarpiece for the Nobili family chapel of S. Jacopo & S. Giovanni Decollato in S. Maria degli Angeli, Florence. ...

This is an altarpiece of the Camaldolese Order dedicated to Saint John the Baptist. An inscription which is now no longer visible, recorded that it was painted for Filippo Neroni in 1387 (?). It is probable it was the altarpiece of the Stoldi Chapel in Santa Maria degli Angeli, Florence. In the centre, Saint John baptizes Christ, with God the Father & the Holy Spirit above. On the wings of the triptych are Saint Peter (left), & Saint Paul (right); the predella, or lower section of the altarpiece, shows episodes from the life of Saint John the Baptist. At the far ends are Saints Benedict (left) & Romuald (right). The pinnacles & side pilasters are missing. ...

Saint John the Baptist baptises Christ in the river Jordan. God the Father & the Holy Ghost in the form of a dove are depicted above; angels attend on either side. New Testament (all Gospels e.g. Matthew 3: 13-17). The composition for this panel follows that of Ghiberti's ' Baptism' on the font of the Baptistery, Siena (1425-7). This is probably the central part of a predella of an altarpiece showing scenes from the life of Saint John the Baptist; three other panels in the collection come from the same predella: ' The Birth of Saint John the Baptist', ' Saint John the Baptist retiring to the Desert' & ' The Head of John the Baptist brought to Herod'. The panels have been associated with an altarpiece dated 1454 of the ' Virgin & Child with Saints' (New York, Metropolitan Museum of Art) which
