In the left background stands Saint Joseph, & the woman in the right foreground is probably Mary Magdalen. The picture depicts Saint Catherine exchanging rings with the Christ child & refers to her symbolic vision of union with Christ. The picture is connected stylistically with a group of works (now mainly in the Lisbon Museum) attributed to Frei Carlos. This artist is believed to have been active at the Convento de Espinheiro in Evora, where he is documented in 1517. ...

The birth of John the Baptist had been prophesied to his aged father Zacharias by an angel. For his disbelief, Zacharias was temporarily struck dumb. He is shown writing John's name on a tablet; after this his speech was restored. New Testament (Luke 1: 59-63). The woman with a halo is presumably intended to be the Virgin although the Bible says she had left Saint Elizabeth's house before the birth. There are two drawings by Barent Fabritius related to this work (Stuttgart, Staatsgalerie & Vienna, Albertina). The former is closest to the present composition. ...

This was the central predella panel of an altarpiece by the Master of the Castello Nativity in Prato (Museo del Duomo). This work was painted as the high altarpiece of the church of S. Alessandro, Brescia. The solemnity of the central scene of the Nativity is relieved by a vision of rejoicing angels occupying the upper part of the panel. On either side, panels depict Saint Alexander (lower left) & Saint Jerome in penitence (lower right) with his lion, a stone & a crucifix. Above these lateral panels are Saint Gaudioso (upper left) & Saint Filippo Benizzi (upper right). The strongly Venetian character of Romanino's work is most apparent in the heroic & richly coloured figure of Saint Alexander (Alessandro), who is in the place of honour, at the right hand of the Holy Family, as befits the patron saint of the church.
