From the church of the Carmine in Florence; probably from the chapel of St Andrew there, founded by Ugolino di Bonsi after 1365. The work is concave, which suggests that it is from a vault. The damaged state of the fragment makes an attribution difficult, & it is not known who was responsible for the frescoes in this chapel. ...

This is an altarpiece of the Camaldolese Order dedicated to Saint John the Baptist. An inscription which is now no longer visible, recorded that it was painted for Filippo Neroni in 1387 (?). It is probable it was the altarpiece of the Stoldi Chapel in Santa Maria degli Angeli, Florence. In the centre, Saint John baptizes Christ, with God the Father & the Holy Spirit above. On the wings of the triptych are Saint Peter (left), & Saint Paul (right); the predella, or lower section of the altarpiece, shows episodes from the life of Saint John the Baptist. At the far ends are Saints Benedict (left) & Romuald (right). The pinnacles & side pilasters are missing. ...

This painting is part of an altarpiece, the main panel of which depicts The Virgin & Child. This section shows Saint Philip; other parts of the altarpiece show Saints Peter, John the Evangelist & John the Baptist. Philip became one of the Twelve Apostles after meeting Jesus through John the Baptist. He was the disciple who Jesus asked to gather food from the crowd before miraculously multiplying it. Philip is thought to have died a martyr's death by being stoned & crucified, & so is often pictured holding a cross. ...
