This is an altarpiece of the Camaldolese Order dedicated to Saint John the Baptist. An inscription which is now no longer visible, recorded that it was painted for Filippo Neroni in 1387 (?). It is probable it was the altarpiece of the Stoldi Chapel in Santa Maria degli Angeli, Florence. In the centre, Saint John baptizes Christ, with God the Father & the Holy Spirit above. On the wings of the triptych are Saint Peter (left), & Saint Paul (right); the predella, or lower section of the altarpiece, shows episodes from the life of Saint John the Baptist. This section shows Saint Philip; other parts of the altarpiece show Saints Peter, John the Evangelist & John the Baptist. Philip became one of the Twelve Apostles after meeting Jesus through John the Baptist. He was the disciple who Jesus asked to gather food from the crowd before miraculously multiplying it. Philip is thought to have died a martyr's death by being stoned & crucified, & so is often pictured holding a cross. ...

The panel is probably part of the predella of Lorenzetti's ' Birth of the Virgin' of 1342, painted for the altar of Saint Sabinus in Siena Cathedral (now in the Museo dell' Opera del Duomo, Siena). It was one of four altarpieces, showing the life of the Virgin, for the altars of the four patron saints of Siena. Pietro Lorenzetti's altarpiece was flanked by figures of Saints Sabinus & Bartholomew & the National Gallery painting was presumably below the first. It apparently illustrates a rare episode showing Venustanius, the Roman Governor of Tuscany, trying to persuade Saints Sabinus, Marcellus & Exuperantius to worship a pagan statue, here apparently Venus since she is shown holding a golden ball representing the apple Paris gave to her. ...
