Before dying, Nessus gave Dejanira his bloody tunic, telling her to give it to Hercules if he was unfaithful, & his affections would return. When she did this the shirt stuck to Hercules' skin & he burned to death in agony. Ovid, ' Metamorphoses' (Book IX). This is a pinnacle panel from an altarpiece by a Florentine master in the 1370s, named after another pinnacle from the same altarpiece in the Lehman Collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York.
