The Art of Annemieke MeinWildlife Artist in Textiles
The Art Of Annemieke
MeinWildlife Artist In
Textiles
    Book DescriptionAnnemieke
    Mein demonstrates how to
    combine embroidery,
    fabric painting and
    textiles to create an
    exciting sculptural
    medium.The textile works
    of Annemieke Mein display
    a rare standard of
    artistry. She has
    explored beyond the
    bounds of craft and
    developed new techniques
    in her use of textiles
    and fabric paints. The
    illustrations in this
    book show how textiles
    can be used as an
    exciting sculptural
    medium. The artist's
    three-dimensional
    creations are works of
    extraordinary skill,
    born out of a passionate
    commitment to the
    environment that she
    observes with a loving
    eye. Annemieke uses an
    amazing variety of
    materials - silk, wool,
    fur, cotton, synthetics
    - carefully chosen for
    their colour, texture,
    credibility and aesthetic
    appeal. These fabrics are
    then meticulously painted
    and stitched to
    faithfully reproduce her
    chosen subjects and to
    enhance the tactile
    quality unique to
    textiles. Numerous
    techniques are used in
    limitless combinations:
    hand and machine
    embroidery, dyeing,
    appliqué, trapunto,
    quilting, pleating,
    felting, beading,
    weaving and plying. The
    work of Annemieke Mein
    will leave the reader
    breathless with wonder.
    It encourages an
    awareness of our natural
    heritage and of the need
    to preserve it. About The
    AuthorAnnemieke Mein was
    born in Haarlem,
    Holland, in 1944. She
    and her parents migrated
    to Australia in 1951 and
    all became Australian
    citizens in 1956. After
    attending school in
    Melbourne, Annemieke
    took up a career in
    nursing, graduating in
    1967. She married Phillip
    Mein in 1968 and they
    moved to Sale in
    south-eastern Victoria in
    1971. Annemieke has
    become internationally
    recognised as an artist
    and craftsman. She was
    the first textile artist
    to be accepted as a
    member of both the
    Wildlife Art Society of
    Australasia and the
    Australian Guild of
    Realist Artists. In 1988
    she had similar works
    touring Australia in both
    art and craft
    exhibitions. She is the
    only textile artist to be
    featured in Australian
    Artist. She has exhibited
    at State and regional
    galleries in Australia
    and in 1980 won the
    inaugural Hoechst Textile
    Award. She is represented
    in the Hoechst and
    Husqvarna international
    collections, in private,
    national and State
    collections in Australia
    and in private
    collections in Holland,
    Sweden, the United
    Stated, United Kingdom,
    New Zealand, Japan and
    Canada. In 1988 she was
    awarded the Order of
    Australia Medal 'for
    services to the Arts,
    particularly in textile
    sculptures and bronze
    bas-relief sculptures'.
    ReviewsEmbroidery
    MagazineJul 05 Annemieke
    Mein is a textile artist
    whose extraordinarily
    beautiful work is born
    out of a passionate
    commitment to the world
    of nature. She says
    'Textile art and wildlife
    have become my hobby,
    profession and addition'.
    The illustrations and
    fascinating text descrive
    Annemieke's close and
    loving relationship to
    nature's creatures, and
we feel drawn to share in
    their most intimate and
    fragile existence. Her
    works are designed to
    have strong visual and
    tactile impact attained
    by combining large
    reliefs, textural
    variations and gorgeous
    colour combinations. The
    illustrations are alive
    with butterflies, moths,
    dragonflies, frogs,
    mayflies and even
    barnacles. So meticulous
    is Annemieke's attention
    to detail and realism,
    that one's fingers travel
    the pages to feel the
    stitches, the cloth,
the fur, the leaves - it
    is irresistible. Simple
    materials are chosen for
    their colour, texture,
    durability and aesthetic
    appeal such as silk
    wadding, satin, fur,
    synthetics, mohair,
    wool scraps and even old
    ties. These combine with
    numerous embroidery
    techniques, such as
    machine and hand
    stitching, appliqué,
    trapunto, quilting and
    pleating to create fine
    textile art.

    Silk PaintersIssue 49,
    Spring 2007 This book is
    all about another
    interesting concept,
    that of indigo. The
    history of indigo dates
    back as far as 2400BC
    with the Egyptians, and
    continues to this day.
    There is a section on
    Health and Safety as is
    usual when dealing with
    chemicals. This is
    followed by illustrated
    pages of all the
    ingredients needed, and
    the methods of preparing
    the fabric. There is a
    wonderful chapter on
    Shibori, which gives
    step by step illustrated
    instructions for
    different types of
    resisit: board clamping -
    Itajime; Kikko folding;
    stitched and gathered
    Shibori - Mokume; folded
    and stitched Shibori -
    Ori nui; and paste
    resist, to name but a
    few. It is worth buying
    the book just for this
    section alone, if you
    are not familiar with
    Shibori. The method of
    preparing the vat and
    dyeing fabrics and yarns
    are all carefully
    explained, together with
    some post-dyeing
    treatments. The book
    finishes with four
    projects, to give you
    some ideas. Everything is
    very well explained and
    illustrated - a good
    introduction to
    indigo.The Textile
    Directory2006 Are you
    feeling blue? Make the
    most of your blue mood
    with this exciting
    hands-on, ‘make-at
    –home’ book which
    describes the indigo
    dyeing process with
    clarity and passion.
    Kikko, Mokume, Ori nui,
    Karamatsu, Maki nui,
    Itajime, Bomaki and
    Katano are evocative
    names for various
    shape-resist patterns
    whose more familiar
    collective Japanese title
    is ‘Shibori’. Vivien
    uses shibori patterns to
    make 4 lovely projects
    — a cushion, silk
    velvet scarf, tea cosy
    and a trendy bog jacket.
    The body of the book,
    both in text and superb
    close-up photographs
    describes the indigo
    dyeing process from start
    to finish, including
    equipment needed. This
    practical book will stir
    not only your indigo vat,
    but also your own
    creative urges — blue
    is beautiful.
