These Dambusters flights take off from Teesside International Airport & offer you over an hour of flying time to give you an insight into the sort of flight training the Dambusters pilots undertook. Although you'll be in a modern two or four seater light aircraft rather than a Lancaster Bomber for these Dambusters flying lessons the views are just as impressive. Those heroic pilots had to practice flying down to 150ft (well below radar detection level) without modern navigational aids. Tricky to say the least. When Doctor Barnes Wallis asked Wing Commander Gibson in the 1955 Dambusters film how they were getting on with the low level flying he replied: ' Ah it's awfully hard to get accuracy. I mean to within a few feet. Especially at night over water. Still we'll find some way of doing it'. Flying in low to drop the famous 'bouncing bombs' over the Ruhr Basin within a few feet of each other was key to the operation's success. Skimming the treetops is pretty scary stuff & as the RAF guys say if you can see the feet of the sheep you're too low. On these Dambusters flight experiences you won't be going that low (phew!) but you will certainly still be able to see the sheep's legs! You will take off for your Dambuster flight & achieve normal cruising level of around 3000-4000ft. There's lots of wild countryside to explore around these parts including the North Yorks Moors & the North Pennines with the likes of Balderhead Selset & Grassholme reservoirs. These places are also the perfect backdrop for a rapid descent down to 500ft (the legal minimum level flying these days). & yes at those sort of flight altitudes you can see everything from the cockpit. Dog walkers on the Moors farmers herding their cattle & of course those ubiquitous sheeps' legs too. But thankfully being in fairly quiet Piper aircraft means 'the chickens won't be laying premature eggs' like they did when the Lancasters roared overhead! Chocks away for a very special Dambusters Spitfire flight! This is vintage military aviation at its very best as you fly over historic Eyebrook Reservoir in a de Havilland Devon accompanied by a Spitfire. It'll be a magnificent Mk IX Spitfire that'll be joining you in the air. Beautifully restored & maintained TD314 now flies under the moniker ' St George' & it's a superb example of this impressive fighter plane. & whilst the St George is undoubtedly the star of the show the plane you'll be flying in for this tour is actually quite special too… The de Havilland Devon is the military equivalent of the Dove civil passenger plane. It boasts a very retro 1950s style harking back to the decade when post-war air travel was quite literally just starting to take off. G-DHDV flying under the serial number VP981 has a fascinating flying history. This included a stint as the personal air transport for Sir Basil Embry when he was Commander of Allied Forces Central Europe based in France. After a final role as the crew plane for the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight from 1985 this graceful Devon was retired from military life. For her new lease of life operating de Havilland Devon flights alongside the St George Spitfire she has kept her resplendent RAF livery. What's more the cabin configuration inside couldn't be better for observing the Spitfire flying beside you. Carrying a maximum of just eight passengers in a one by one configuration every seat is a window seat & they are really large windows at that
- nothing like the commercial jets of today! This all means you are guaranteed fabulous unobstructed views from the de Havilland Devon as the glorious Spitfire glides effortlessly into view. The back drop of Eyebrook Reservoir is highly appropriate too. This is where Dambuster training sessions took place in May 1943 prior to the raids. All in all your Dambusters Spitfire flight lasts around 40 minutes & once back in the hangar try & make time to visit delightful on-site Aviation Museum

Enjoy a London vintage pleasure flight in a wonderful de Havilland Devon! These vintage airliner flights will show you all the best of the capital in the most nostalgic way possible. This is a very special plane & one that has certainly earned its place in the aviation history books as the aircraft that revolutionised passenger air travel after the war. These vintage airliner flights are operated out of Kent's Headcorn Aerodrome using a de Havilland Devon. The Devon is the military version of the commercial airliner the de Havilland Dove. This particular plane is a shining example of a ex-RAF Devon. Having been built in Hawarden Chester in 1946 she immediately entered military service as VP981 & was posted to RAF Hendon. A very well-travelled Devon there followed several years of service at Fontainebleau in France as the private transport for the Air Attaché & for the Commander of Allies Forces. Returning to the UK in 1966 for stints at RAF Andover & RAF Northolt she was (very carefully) put into storage in 1975. In 1985 a new career took off as crew transport for the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight based at RAF Coningsby before finally being retired from military duties in 1998. As an ex-military Devon she is now revelling in the fact that she is now flying a range of civilian vintage pleasure flights including this one over London. In just 15 minutes you'll be within range of all those landmarks buildings & sights of the capital. Unlike today's jet airliners the vintage Devon affords every passenger a large window so wherever you are seated in the cabin you'll get a great view of London. Resplendent in her authentic Royal Air Force Transport Command colours seeing the de Havilland Devon sitting on the tarmac at Headcorn is truly a sight to behold.
