Hardy in the UK, frost can cause a lot of damage to young buds, reducing the number of flowers, so it’s advisable to protect your plant with fleece if freezing weather is likely. As this hydrangea flowers on new wood, you can leave the faded hydrangea flower heads in place until the new buds begin to swell in spring – this also protects the new growth from frost damage. Just cut back the stems to a strong pair of buds. Remove any branches that are damaged or dead as well as any that are misplaced. After pruning hydrangeas, apply a mulch of well-rotted manure or compost around the base of the plant. Unique in that it will grow to just 50cm tall, ' Polestar' is perfect for container growing so you don't even need a garden to appreciate its beautiful, colour-changing blooms. The delicate blooms emerge green-white & take on a pink hue as they age, becoming pinker as the seasons progress. Coming into flower from late May & lasting well into October the faded flowers can remain on the plant right through the winter bringing extended interest across the seasons. Easy to grow & hardy right down to -25°C, this is a hydrangea suitable for anyone to grow & it will even double as a houseplant for the spring

Care Planting advice for Hydrangea ' Polestar': Grow in fertile, humus-rich, moist but well-drained soil in full sun or partial shade with shelter from cold drying winds. Dig a planting hole 3 x wider than the roots of the shrub you're planting & mix some well-rotted compost or manure with the soil from the hole & use this to re-fill once the shrub is in place. Before planting soak container-grown shrubs thoroughly & allow to drain. Remove the plant from its pot & tease out a few of the roots. Add Mycorrhizal fungi to the roots when planting to help plants establish quicker. Place your shrub in the hole at the same level at the pot & refill the hole with the earth removed (backfilling). Firm in the soil with your heel, avoiding the root ball & water well. The Kitchen Bay, Laurus nobilis, is thought to have been first cultivated in the 17th century, & has been a herb garden essential ever since. These evergreen shrubs have aromatic leaves that are a culinary staple, bringing mouthwatering depth & a rich aroma to everything from soups, stews & curries to Bolognese & roasted or barbecued meats. They’re best when plucked fresh from the bush & simply added to the pot whole & left to infuse. Fresh leaves have a lighter, more floral flavour than dried leaves & can be kept in the fridge. If dried, they have a more intense flavour. They should be removed before serving unless they're ground or chopped. Bays are often grown in pots & respond well to training into topiary shapes. However, their lush, glossy & dense foliage makes them ideal for hedging & they make excellent structural features in formal gardens. They require little more than a light trim in early spring & summer to maintain the desired shape & will happily grow in sun or partial shade in well-drained soil. They’re also well suited to coastal locations. Fully deserving its coveted RHS Award of Garden Merit, you can be sure that this is a proven garden performer, guaranteed to be suitable for UK gardeners at every level of experience.
