Often referred to as a 'solar windmill', this fascinating scientific curiosity was invented by the English chemist Sir William Crookes in 1873. When exposed to 'radiant light' such as sunlight or an incandescent light bulb the paddles inside will spin; the hotter the light, the faster they go! This all happens due to pressure imbalances created within the perfect vacuum of the glass bulb. Even if the science is a bit beyond you, it is a truly beguiling marvel to sit on a sunny windowsill & observe. ...

Solar Powered Airship

The ingenious Airship is a huge eight metre long sleeve made from a thin black plastic film (like the stuff bin liners are made of) and is simply filled with air when you are ready to fly. To describe the Airship as solar powered is technically true although perhaps a bit misleading. There are no solar panels but it presumably works by absorbing heat from the sun through the black skin, heating the air inside which makes the Airship rise. It is incredible to have something so big hovering up to 50 metres above you, and even possibly slightly unnerving, but as it weighs next to nothing it is completely harmless. Easily repairable if damaged, and re-useable. Excellent entertainment value. Does not require Helium!
