The de Havilland Vampire was the second jet fighter to enter RAF service, coming after the Gloster Meteor.  Featuring a twin boom fuselage, which was to become a common feature of de Havilland designs, the Vampire proved a capable early jet fighter.  The Vampire T.11 trainer was developed from the fighter versions & served the RAF until 1967.  It was an excellent trainer & examples continue to fly today both in the UK & further afield. First flying in 1939, the Focke-Wulf Fw 190 proved to be an immediate threat to RAF fighters when introduced in late 1941, being faster & more manoeuvrable than the Spitfire V then in service. This A-8 version was the most numerous & heavily armed variant, which entered service in 1944, as an attempt to stop the Allied daylight raids, however, by then the new Allied fighters had begun to outclass it. Airfix Starter Sets are ideal for beginners.  Each Small Starter Set

The Gloster Gladiator occupies an important place within the history of the RAF. The last of the RAF's biplane fighters, the Gladiator had some modern features, such as an enclosed cockpit, a first for an RAF fighter, as well as an armament of four machine guns. Still in service at the outbreak of the war, the Gladiator proved to be a capable biplane fighter, but was outclassed against modern monoplane opposition. The mount of some of the RAF's most famous pilots, such as Pat Pattle & Roald Dahl, preserved Gladiators can still be seen flying today at Duxford & Old Warden air displays. The Airfix Dogfight Spitfire Gift Set features a 1: 72 Scale plastic model and includes glue, brushes and paints. "Nearly all our engagements with 109s took place at around 20, 000 - 25, 000 ft. The Spitfire had the edge over them in speed and climb, and particularly in turning circle. He went on pulling round as sharply as he could. I followed him without any difficulty and went on firing bursts at him. There were puffs of black smoke and then a trail of white vapour streamed from his aircraft" This actual"e from a Battle of Britain pilot tells of the dogfights between these two exceptional fighters in the skies of 1940. Suitable for skill level 2.
