Lemon Balm is a hardy perennial herb which is noted for its strong lemon aroma. In the kitchen Lemon Balm can be added to fish & poultry dishes herb sauces salads or to sweeten jam. Another option is to infuse the leaves in hot water for a lovely herbal balm tea.

Sow from March to May in pots or trays on the surface of barely moist seed compost & cover with a sprinkling of finely sieved compost. Place in a propagator at 20-25C until germination which takes up to 21 days. Transplant seedlings to small pots or cells until they are large enough to plant outdoors. Plant 30cm apart in full sun once frost risk has passed. Harvest from July to sharp frosts. Plants should survive for several years protect your plants over winter with a mulch of compost or leaf mould.

    - this lettuce has a superb taste & is an excellent leaf for green salads.

    - sow thinly in drills 13mm deep in rows 30cm apart in well-prepared soil in full sun. Thin plants to 25cm apart & keep well watered for the most flavoursome hearts. This has good downy mildew tolerance & the hearts stand well without bolting (running to seed) if kept well watered. Harvest from June to September. These plants adapt well to variable weather conditions. To reveal perfect hearts just strip off outer leaves from older plants.
