The Black Crows Camox Freebird is the most popular model in their very successful Freebird line-up. It's a backcountry ski that perfectly balances the demand for performance with comfortable handling which, with the 96mm waist & the tip & tail rocker, makes it super versatile. The paulownia wood core ensures the weight is kept down without affecting the strength & is reinforced with Titanal in the binding area for increased torsional rigidity & edge grip. It's light enough for multi-day tours & it has the ski ability to keep up with pretty much any mid 90mm waisted model. Terrain Type & Ability Level Terrain Type The Freebird is the lighter version of the standard Camox & is a verstaile backcountry option, designed to be paired up with a hike enabled binding. It has the right mix of grip & comfortable handling to be happy in everything from steeper, firmer slopes to gentler & softer conditions. If you want to charge & prefer trickier terrain then check out the Navis Freebird, but if you need one ski to do everything & that you can relax on as well, then the Camox is the ideal choice. Skier Type It's for backcountry skiers who want to be in every type of snow & tackle all but the gnarliest terrain. The shape & construction balance the requirements for skiing faster & more aggressively with those needed for softer snow or skiing at a more relaxed pace. It will grip & respond when it's pushed but it isn't going to punish the legs when you want to ease off. Overview Shape 96mm in the waist with a 17m radius (178cm) make this an excellent all rounder, capable of dealing with any snow. Stable & wide enough to deal with soft or mixed conditions and still lay down medium & long radius turns on piste.  Tapered tips & tails improve the handling in soft & variable snow. Rocker The Camox Freebird uses a progressive front rocker with a slight rear rocker & medium camber underfoot. This gives excellent pivot control & maoneuvrability with good planeing too. The slight rise on the tail helps turn completion without interferring with skin placement or the ability to place the tail in the snow. The camber improves stability & the nose rocker makes turning easier whatever the conditions. Core A paulownia wood core has excellent strength to weight characteristics & ensures good energy. This is reinforced with Titanal in the binding area to add strength & exra torsional rigidity for edge grip, without over-stiffening the ski. Overall, this core set-up helps the Camox Freebird feel a bit more forgiving than the Navis Freebird. Construction The cap sidewall mix offers the best of both. The cap sections at the tip & tail increase durability & help with ease in & out of the turn. The sidewall improves the grip & precision. This combination works well on a 97mm ski as it allows strong skiing on firm snow & isn't over-responsive when the conditions get difficult or soft. Key Featurese B tester’s comments: Mark (Ski Trainer) The perfect blend of all mountain performance & lightness. It didn't feel overbearing yet there's plenty of power & grip for eager skiers who want to rip everywhere. It's light enough for a good skin up too. Black Crow’s  Camox has freestyle DNA & an all-condition design, making it a playful but not soft, freeride & all mountain ski. There’s no metal in the build but a solid construction,  and a shape that keeps the effective edge long,  means it has plenty of control for stronger skiers. On piste it isn’t afraid of speed & will lay down medium & long turns as well as popping off hits & bumps. Off-piste & the mix of stability & manoeuvrability makes it shine, whether turning through powder or dealing with old snow, on wide open slopes or in tighter,  more controlled situations.  Terrain Type & Ability Level Terrain Type The Camox is a genuine all rounder, happy to carve & play on pistes all day or to head off-piste & explore whatever snow you’ll find. In medium & long turns on groomers you can dial up the speed & the grip won’t let you down at all. Then,  because there’s no metal,  it isn’t over-stiff or over-precise when skiing off-piste & manoeuvrability becomes more important, especially as the terrain or conditions get trickier.  It won’t match the float of wider,  more rockered models but it will leave them in its trail away from the powder. Skier Type Advanced all condition skiers looking for a strong but playful ski will definitely enjoy the Camox. There’s no metal in here, so the flex is a bit softer than some skis around the same width that would have it, but for a ski with this kind of construction it feels nicely solid. It’s not an especially forgving ski so won’t suit intermediates particularly well. For decent skiers it strikes a good balance between grip & control for carving on pistes & manoeuvrability for skiing all mountain.  Overview Shape 97mm in the waist with a 20m radius (180cm) make this an excellent all rounder, capable of dealing with any snow. Stable & wide enough to handle soft or mixed conditions and still lay down medium & long radius turns on piste.  The contact points sit further into the tip & tail than a Captis & this makes it more positive in & out of the turn,  adding extra grip as the contact length is longer.  It’s freestyle DNA is seen in the partial twin tip design at the tail that allows a smoother turn release & adds to the playful feel of the ski. Rocker Double Rocker uses a rocker at the tip & tail with medium classic camber underfoot. The rocker helps with control in rougher snow & improves manoeuvrability. The camber helps with grip & response. Core A poplar wood core ensures good durability & energy. Construction The cap sidewall mix offers the best of both. The cap sections at the tip & tail increase durability & help with ease in & out of the turn. The sidewall improves the grip & precision. This combination works well on a 97mm ski as it allows strong skiing on firm snow & isn’t over-responsive when the conditions get difficult or soft. Key Featurese B tester’s comments: Mark (Trainer)  These feel great in such a mixture of conditions & speeds. Fast on the groomer or a little slower just off the side or a bit beyond. Perfect for anyone wanting to get more adventurous. The  Captis  Birdie is built for playing, no matter where you are on the hill or what the weather is doing. The medium flex core, central camber & 90mm waist provide a stable fun platform with the versatility to ski anywhere.  Tip & tail rocker work perfectly with this, improving handling in softer or rougher snow. The result is a perfect ski for exploring the mountain. It's just at home on the piste as it is slashing the slush or floating through powder.   Terrain Type & Ability Level Terrain Type It's a resort based ski, hitting the pistes & the easily accessible terrain around the runs. Red slopes would it be the default setting, cruising fast & swapping turn sizes, carving or allowing some sliding in & out of turns, as well as getting away from the marked trails & looking for other snow. It is not over-stiff but still feels solid, it's as much fun skiing off the sides as it is on piste. Thanks to its good stability it doesn't get kicked about. easy manoeuvrability makes it simple to handle whether in powder, trees or bumps. Skier Type Good intermediate & lighter, or smoother skiing, advanced skiers. There's no metal in the construction so it isn't over-stiff but, for a ski without metal, it doesn't feel soft either. This translates to nice mix of forgiving & solid & is ideal for an all mountain skier that will be skiing pistes a lot of the time with the occasional run off the sides & further. It makes a great alternative to a freestyle ski as it has more grip & is more powerful as it retains that playful, poppy feel. Overview Shape 90mm is perfect for a go anywhere ski that doesn't lose piste performance & the 17m radius (164cm) matches this to make it feel comfortable in any environment. The tip & tail have long transition areas with the contact points set back, making the ski track more smoothly & feel more stable; the tail is lifted – not as much as a twin tip – & this allows a smoother turn release.  Rocker Double Rocker uses a rocker at the tip & tail with medium classic camber underfoot. The rocker helps with control in rougher snow & improves manoeuvrability. The camber helps with grip & response. Core A poplar wood core ensures good durability & energy, this is slightly softer than unisex version of the Captis. Construction The cap sidewall mix offers the best of both. The cap sections at the tip & tail increase durability & help with ease in & out of the turn. The sidewall sits in the centre & improves the grip & precision. This combination works well on a 90mm ski as it allows strong skiing on firm snow & isn't over-responsive when the conditions get difficult or soft. Key Featurese B tester’s comments: Sarah (Aviemore) So playful & such a lively all mountain ski. Super smooth transitions between terrain types & good on firm snow too.
