2014 is the first complete season that Travis Rice will be riding Union bindings, having chosen to ride for them half way through 2013. Obviously all equipment choices are personal, but Travis Rice’s decision to ride Union certainly puts them in the front spot for the “ Who make the best bindings?” question that we are frequently asked here at Bliss Snowboards. Features: Base plates By offering Lifetime Warranty on all of their bases, Union stand by their Stronger tag line. The Factory has a Raw Injected Du Pont™ Zytel® ST Base, which features pigmentless nylon. The standard Union Du Pont™ Zytel® ST Bases have a dye incorporated into the material, to colour the base material, however for absolute strength & purity of the materials involved, the Factory model uses un-dyed, raw nylon for ultimate strength to weight 3D Extruded Heelcups use CNC machining to drastically reduce weight, without affecting strength or performance. It is a slow & expensive process, but produces outstanding results. They are also covered by the lifetime warranty. The Factory has Injected EVA Bushings underfoot to dampen vibrations & minimise interference with the natural flex of the board. The Factory also features a 2.5 degree Canted gas pedal. The gas pedal is sometimes called the toe ramps, & in this case they are angled inwards, to match the natural angle that your boot meets the binding. This reduces knee fatigue, & allows for a more natural stance on the board. A truly great feature. Straps 3D Direct-Connect Strap System is easy & comfortable to use & enter/exit. Union are obviously keen to get as many of us riding Flite Pro’s as possible. This is the only explanation why they are fitting Highbacks from last year’s Contact Pro on a £145 binding. There are some great features not often found on a binding at this price point. 3D tapered straps, Extruded Aluminium Heelcups & dual density EVA bushings are not really supposed to be on bindings that cost less than £150.
