The Flite Pro looks like a much higher priced binding. The incredible highbacks, superlight Dupont Zytel nylon & Extruded Aluminium heelcups all come together to create an outstanding binding. Probably better suited to all mountain freestyle than all out freeride, this binding can, nevertheless ride anything well, & in comfort. Specification: • Dupont Zytel ST Baseplates • 3d Heelcups • EVA Bushing • Contoured Ankle Straps • All new open Toe Straps • Injected Aluminium Buckles • Tool Free Ankle Strap Adjustment • Flite Pro Highbacks • All New Binding Disks • Grade 8.8 hardware Base/ Heelcups Dupont Zytel ST Baseplates are constructed of an extremely light blended nylon material. Super strong, yet still incredibly light. They do not become brittle at low (mountain) temperatures, & provide a really usable balance of stiffness (response) & compliance (comfort) 3D Heelcups are extruded from a single block of aluminium. It’s not the cheapest method, but it’s the best process available on Aluminium heelcups, outstanding strength & longevity. EVA Bushing is multi-layer foam padding that sits between your board & your baseplates. It absorbs vibration & shocks, resulting in a silky smooth, comfy ride from first tracks to last chair. Straps: Contoured Ankle Straps are ergonomically shaped. These comfortably match the profile of your snowboard boot, & when set up correctly using tool free strap adjustment, reduce pinch or pressure points. Open Toe Straps are new for 2014/15. One of the very few criticisms that Union bindings have received over the years, are with the shaping of the toe straps on some models. New for 2014/15 is an enhanced toe strap profile. Injected Aluminium buckles are strong & light, & don’t jam up in the cold. Free Ankle Strap Adjustment allows quick & easy adjustment of your ankle position while on the hill. Highback: Flite Pro Highbacks are out of place on a binding that costs less than £150. Based on the original Contact Pro highback from 2012 (designed by Gig Ruf), they are super light thanks to the (almost excessive) cut outs. Super comfy, stunningly light, & they look pretty good too. Discs/hardware: All New Binding Disks are compatible with 4x 2, 4x 4 & Burton’s Channel system. Grade 8.8 Hardware is a nice touch. The majority of snowboard binding hardware uses ‘standard’ steel. In engineering terms, this would be described as ‘mild’ or low tensile steel, as it generally measures 4.6 on a Rockwell scale. Union use ‘ High Tensile’ steel that measures 8.8 on a Rockwell scale. Bigger the number, the less chance of breaking/stripping/rounding your hardware. I truly love the Flite Pro. I appreciate that Union are offering premium quality products, at a price point that a retail assistant can afford! I used these bindings extensively at last year’s ‘ Snowboard Spring Break’ & loved them so much, I will be buying a pair for myself for the upcoming season. Is it for me? If you are after a super plush, comfy binding, that can handle the odd steep & deep.&n
