Vortex drysuit is
Northern Diver’s
entry-level model. It is
manufactured from a
polyester/nylon
trilaminate fabric and is
available in blue and
black. In the past, it
has proved to be popular
with armed and special
forces in Australia,
Holland, Belgium,
Ireland and Iceland. It
is available in various
styles, with the
recreational diver
version proving to be the
most common choice. As
with the Cortex, the
internal seals are
triple-glued,
rubber-taped and
vulcanised. The knees are
fitted with a
double-layer padded
knee-patch that is
printed with rubber for
extra protection. This
printed rubber protection
is also applied to the
shoulder areas, which
are prone to wear from
the straps of a BC. At
under £500 this suit
represents pretty good
value for money compared
with what the competition

.. This is the suit that
started the business.
It’s the bruiser of the
bunch and will suit any
die-hard UK diver. The
original design was
developed for Mike
Armitage’s (CEO at
Northern Diver) passion
for wreck diving and
salvage. The Origin is
made from 8mm neoprene
and has a tough outer
lining. This suit has an
incredibly rugged feel
and features a heavy-duty
six-pitch dry-zip (six
individually riveted
teeth to the inch). This
zip would be my preferred
choice on all the suits.
The hard-sole boots are
neo-vulcanised and the
kneepads are made from a
choice of Kevlar® or
rubber. The suit is also
supplied with either a
separate vented wet hood
with a face seal or an
attached dry hood with a
latex neck seal. I’m
sure you could get them
to make the latter with a
neoprene seal as this is
a great combination. Two
pockets are standard,
however, these can be
replaced with one larger
knife pocket if

Ultra-Flexible RBX is
capable of coping with
the stresses that UK
divers can inflict on a
drysuit. The dual-density
polymer means that it
effectively has the same
toughness as a suit twice
as thick. Furthermore,
its outer shell features
a small cross-stitch
weave - reputed to
increase its durability
by 400 percent - and all
seals are 'bonded for
life'. Kevlar reinforcing
has been added to the
shoulders and knees,
while the zip flap, seat
area and fitted socks
feature overprinting.
Each thigh supports a
zipped cargo pocket with
D-ring, and the arms
each have a natty
computer dock that's
designed to retain the
leading brands of dive
computers. We've been
diving with the RBX for
several months, and
there are only cosmetic
differences between the
latest version and ours.
It can certainly cope
with the rough treatment
we gave it at the Test
Centre and, as you can

it looks as good as new.
