The Race Type D is a relatively light tyre that still provides good puncture protection & excellent grip making it ideal for winter training. The D in Race Type D stands for Duro or durable thanks to three key features. The first is dual compound Evo 2 rubber which is harder on centre of the tread (the bit in contact with the road when youre vertical) & softer on the edges (the bit in contact when youre cornering). The softer rubber provides more grip when you need it. The second feature is a reinforced casing to help prevent punctures & the third is a protective belt under the tread to provide additional protection. Put all that with an advertised weight of 257g for the 26mm version (pretty much confirmed by the road.cc scales at 260g) & it add up to a tyre thats well suited for faster rides on bad roads in bad weather. The Race D is also available in a 23mm width with an advertised weight of 230g. Over the past few years Ive followed the trend & have 25mm or 26mm tyres on most of my bikes now. For longer rides theyre definitely more comfortable & the boffins say theres less rolling resistance too so its a win-win. Down in the workshop fitting & removing these Panaracers was easy Â- for the record on to Open Pro rims Â- with the tyres neither too tight nor too sloppy on the rims. Only two tyre levers were needed to get the tyres off the wheel (and none were needed to get them on Â- skilled mechanics say you should never need to use tyre levers for fitting a tyre anyway). The Panaracer Race D tyres recommended retail price is a penny under £40 though you can find it at least a fiver cheaper at some on-line stores Â- where its also listed as Panaracer Race Duro. This is fair value but not a bargain. Tyres that might be considered comparable include the Schwalbe Durano at around £32-35 (with the folding bead variety weighing around 250g) Schwalbe Durano Plus at a similar price (but heavier) & the Conti GP 4 Seasons anywhere from £30 to £40 (and a tad lighter than the Panaracer). So far Ive done a few hundred miles on these tyres & found them ideal. Grip is good even on soaking wet Cotswold lanes & I havent had a puncture yet despite the local farmers doing their best with the hedge-trimmings. Having said that maybe Ive been lucky. You can definitely get tyres with more puncture protection but they tend to be heavier. & you can get lighter tyres but you expose yourself to more flats. Panaracer bill this as a lightweight high performance road tyre & at a claimed 185g (191g on our scales) it lives up to its name. Lighter means less rubber & so more risk of punctures though the suggested use is for short races such as hill climbs & TTs where puncturing is less likely. There is however some protection in the form of Panaracers PT belt. & with the tyres mounted on my bike for a month I have yet to suffer a flat. Anyone who tests tyres knows that the puncture gods are fickle but perhaps the PT (puncture technology) protection is doing its job. To save weight the reinforcement runs only under the tread rather than bead to bead as on the Race Type A & other models. Panaracer claim that the 126TPI AX casing is the perfect balance between suppleness & toughness. It does have that grippy-soft compound feel common to the upper echelons of bike rubber. The tread is uniform around the contact area & has a slight low-profile roughness. The tyres couldnt have come for testing at a better time given the great weather recently. The Type Ls soft compound inspires confidence when cornering & it rolls quickly on sunny clear roads. Thats not to say it would slide all over the place with a cloud in the sky but I wouldnt fancy such a light tyre during the early spring hedge cutting or when the lanes are back to their mucky autumn state. But then that isnt part of its job description. At around £35 it is at the Michelin Pro 3 or Continental GP4000 price point & its a good race-day alternative to either of them. The ~15g weight saving that it offers over the competitors could be the tipping point. For those wanting to save every last gramme on their race whippet it could just be the tyre of choice. Verdict If youre looking for a lightweight tyre that wont puncture every ride you wont go far wrong with the Panaracer Type L ...
