Overview
Releases 5 & 6 of the Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS) specifications bring important enhancements to the packet delivery capability of the UMTS air interface in the form of High Speed Downlink Packet Access (HSDPA) & the Enhanced uplink Dedicated Channel (E-DCH). These enhancements offer realistic bit rates in excess of those required to qualify as a third-generation (3G) technology. This enables UMTS network operators both to extend current service capability & push into new market areas.
This class provides a clear & logically organized description of both HSDPA & the E-DCH (sometimes known as High Speed Uplink Packet Access (HSUPA)). The class begins with a general description of the aims, capabilities & techniques used to enhance the UMTS air interface & continues with detailed technical descriptions covering first the operation of HSDPA & then, separately, the operation of the E-DCH.
