At last the Dodo said, `EVERYBODY has won, & all must have prizes.' ` But who is to give the prizes?' quite a chorus of voices asked. ` Why, SHE, of course, ' said the Dodo, pointing to Alice with one finger; & the whole party at once crowded round her, calling out in a confused way, ` Prizes! Prizes!' Alice had no idea what to do, & in despair she put her hand in her pocket, & pulled out a box of comfits, (luckily the salt water had not got into it), & handed them round as prizes. There was exactly one a-piece all round. ` But she must have a prize herself, you know, ' said the Mouse. ` Of course, ' the Dodo replied very gravely. ` What else have you got in your pocket?' he went on, turning to Alice. ` Only a thimble, ' said Alice sadly. ` Hand it over here, ' said the Dodo. The Dodo was a clumsy flightless bird who lived on the island of Mauritius in the Indian Ocean. Lewis Carroll reputedly used the Dodo displayed in the Natural History museum in Oxford for the character of the Dodo in Alice's Adventure in Wonderl&. The Dodo displayed there is on of the few rare surviving specimens anywhere in the world which is pretty amazing! I love visiting the museum & this little trinket is an idea I had whilst sketching that very Dodo a few weeks ago. It is one of my most favourite places to spend an afternoon. My collection of Alice in Wonderland jewellery is inspired by my frequent visits to Oxford which is the birth place of the Alice in Wonderland & Through the Looking Glass. I originally created these designs as a little souvenir of my trips & adventures there. The sterling silver plated on brass locket measures 35mm x 23mm, the pewter key charm measures 25mm x 12mm, the sterling silver plated on brass clock charm measures 12mm x 10mm & the silver plated chain measures 62cms.
