The Chardonnay comes from several vineyards around the village of Argeliers, around 30km inland of the Mediterranean near Narbonne. Made from the first juices obtained after pressing, which are fermented with partial oak contact, and aged on their lees for 3 months. An invitingly fruit-driven wine, with aromas of ripe apple and nectarine embellished with delicate notes of spring flowers. Generous on the palate, with soft acidity and a rounded texture. Enjoy chilled, either on its own, or with your choice of fruits de mer.
The Fontanafredda estate is owned and run by a bank, the Monte dei Paschi di Siena. Whilst owning 70 hectares of land, surplus grapes are ordered in from local growers. The producer makes many wines in Tuscany and Piedmont, with this Barolo one of their best. This is a robust, full bodied wine packed with structure and fully capable of standing the test of time. The bouquet is clean and intense, with typical Barolo characteristics of wild roses and tar. Due to the full-bodied nature of Barolo, full-flavoured dishes such as Bolognese and spicy meatballs are required.
Plaisir de Merle is a vine growing area established by French Huguenots in 1693, now covering nearly 1000 hectares, on the slopes of the Simonsberg mountains. The modern winery here was developed in the 1990s under the supervision of Paul Pontallier of Chteau Margaux.
Sourced from a range of vineyards, primarily in the Charentes and Gascogne regions, supplemented by traditional varieties from the Loire Valley, this is a versatile and easy-drinking wine very much in the southern French tradition. Light with an up-front nose of citrus fruit, tinged with a subtle leafy character. Crisp and dry on the palate, with plenty of refreshing acidic bite. A great lunchtime white, ideal as a partner for rice or pasta salads, or simple white meat and fish dishes.
2009 was one of the best red Burgundy vintages in recent memory. Domaine Vincent Legou is a small estate producing top quality Burgundy wines. Our buyer was so impressed with this wines quality he couldnt resist buying the small amount available. Its nose and palate are overflowing with berry fruit character - blackberries, blackcurrants and raspberries abound - while 16 months in oak have given it a spicy, savoury finish. Because were distributing this Web Exclusive to stores specifically to cover web orders, delivery may take a few days longer than normal and in some cases may be outside our normal 7-day guarantee.
This wine is named in honour of New Zealand's Southern Alps, known locally as the Main Divide. This striking landscape is where Pegasus Bay's vines call home. They're blessed by excellent soil quality and sea breezes from the Pacific. This Riesling is slightly off-dry in style. It has notes of honeysuckle, ripe apricot and lime, with a mineral undercurrent and zippy acidity. Some grapes affected by botrytis were added to provide a honeyed richness. Try it with duck.
The Rhône Valley is one of the most ancient wine regions in the whole world. The Guigal family are third-generation winemakers that have made a massive impression here. Their name is now synonymous with excellent quality Rhône wines. And it’s all down to their meticulous approach. They pay growers three times the market rate to get the best grapes and even make their own barrels to ensure the ageing process is spot on. This has a higher proportion of Syrah than the usual Southern Rhône blend, making it extra fruity and warmly spicy. It’s a fantastically versatile wine, ideal for buffets with Lyonnaise-style cold meats.
Bodegas Eguía are located in Elciego in the Rioja Alavesa subregion, where they have 50 hectares of estate vineyards as well as several partner growers, with vines averaging 40 years of age. This wine receives 30 months in barrel and 3 years in bottle before release. Ruby red with medium density and a brick-like rim. The fruit is very mature, exhibiting raisin, prune and caramel notes, accompanied by vanilla, clove and leather. Silky mouth-feel and good length. Drink with all slow-cooked lamb dishes, or with nutty-tasting cheeses.
Haut Brignon is a family-owned château in the village of Plassac, which lies on the banks of the Gironde immediately south of Blaye. Being so close to the river, the soils here are partly silt-based, with the remainder made up of the region's typical chalk and clay. A good solid middleweight claret, with plenty of ripe blackberry and plum fruit character. Cool fermentation and maturation in stainless steel have preserved a fresh, supple feel. A sound match for roasted pork belly.
