has a longer cut when
compared to the rest of
M.E.s hard shell range
aimed at for those
wanting a bit more
coverage. The main body,
underarms, and hood are
constructed out of
3-layer Gore-tex 50D fabric.
Then in areas such as
shoulders, elbows and
waist, where a jacket
receives the most abuse,
M.E. has reinforced them
with a 3-layer
Gore-Tex 70D fabric.
The Mountain HC Hood is
fully adjustable and
helmet compatible; it is
a bit of a snug fit with
a helmet as it has not
been designed for
prolonged helmet use.
This style hood is great
if you are doing a bit a
scrambling or other

of your thighs dry, so

able to wear a harness

The Rab Bergen Jacket is
just like a VW Golf, its
pretty much all the
jacket youll need. It
may not be the most
technically advanced, it
may not be the most
exciting to look at and
it may not allude to
Alpine peaks and
pioneering first ascents;
but it does do what it is
designed to do very well.
The Bergen is cut longer
to keep your bum and top
of your thighs dry, so
whilst you may not be
able to wear a harness
comfortably, you will be
well protected when
yomping across the
mountains in horizontal
rain. The body of the
Bergen is made from mid
weight Event and the
shoulders and arms
feature a heavier fabric
to combat abrasion and
provide durability, so
whilst it may not be
super light, it will
last for years and cope
with carrying a pack. The
Event fabric used is a a
totally waterproof and
highly breathable
membrane offering high
performance at sensible
prices. Our personal
experience shows that it
is just as waterproof as
and breathable as the new
Gore-Tex Pro fabrics. Rab
are the masters of hood
design, they are not so
big that your head just
wallows around in it,
they cinch down without
obscuring your vision and
they have a wired peak so
it doesn’t flop down
over your eyes. Youd be
amazed how many technical
jackets are let down by
poor hood design, but
not with the Rab Bergen,
in my humble opinion it
has the best hood design
of any jacket currently

wind-shell. But it is
such a versatile and
addictive bit of kit that

the Bergelmir is how

jackets, you can put up
the hood, rotate your

climbing when you need to
hear your partner. While
we are on the subject of
hoods, the one on
the Bergelmir is just
about perfect. Now I have
been accused of being a
bit of a hood pedant,
but I cant stand overly
massive hoods that dont
fit your head and flop
around your eyes.
The Bergelmir hood is
fully helmet compatible
yet still fits snugly
when lidless, it has a
wired and stiffened peak
that keeps its shape and
offers superb visibility.
If you are not using the
hood, but still have the
zip fully up there is
good face protection from
the high neck line and
all adjuster cords are
routed internally to
avoid whipping you in the
face. Pockets are set
high on the chest to
avoid interfering with a
harness and are big
enough to take a folded
OS map. A laminated
internal pocket securely
holds a phone or GPS.
And thats about it as far

The Fjallraven Keb is a
tough and durable yet
lightweight and
breathable technical
outdoor jacket suitable
for just about any active
outdoor pursuit. The best
way to describe this
versatile jacket is as a
reinforced lightweight
softshell. It is not
completely waterproof but
it will repel rain, snow
and wind whilst allowing
superb breathability and
freedom of movement. The
Keb uses the brilliant
G1000 fabric, a mixture
of 65% polyester and 35%
cotton on the main wear
areas of chest, outer
arms, hips and seat and
a lightweight four way
stretch softshell fabric
across the back,
shoulders and inner arms

whole lower part of the
jacket has very few seams
and a clean flat design

closest fitting cut that
M.E. do. But because you

wearing big clumpy boot
and ski boots they have
increased the lower leg
volume for you. The
braces are fully
adjustable and they have
installed a drop rear
seat (crap flap), so you
don’t have to de-rig
when nature calls. There
