Thyme Oil is water and steam-distilled from the partially dried wild herb, Thymus Vulgaris. Distillation is mainly undertaken in Spain, but also occurs elsewhere in the Mediterranean region. There are many different species of Thyme and within Thymus Vulgaris there are a variety of chemotypes that change the constituent make-up of the oil significantly. The most common chemotypes are "Thymol" and "Carvacrol", which contain high levels of toxic Phenols (up to 60% Thymol and Carvacrol). Absolute Aromas offers "Sweet Thyme", which is sweeter, less toxic and less irritant than the Thymol and Carvacrol types, with a maximum 3% concentration of these components. Try adding 1 drop each of Thyme, Lemon and Rosemary to the water in an oil burner to help create a 'germ-free zone' during times of family ills. Blend 2 drops of Thyme, 3 drops of Geranium and 1 drop of Palmarosa in a teaspoon of Peach Kernel oil. Use a body massage oil to help you get back on your feet after illness or if you are feeling run-down. Do not use Sweet Thyme during pregnancy. Using Thyme in the bath may irritate those with sensitive skin.
Tea Tree Oil has found great acceptance worldwide, not just with aromatherapists, but also with pharmaceutical companies, hospitals and clinics. The Absolute Aromas Tea Tree is naturally farmed in Australia, the original source for Melaleuca Alternifolia. Tea Tree is highly anti-septic, anti-bacterial, anti-viral and anti-fungal. It is an excellent skin cleanser. Try adding 25 drops to a bottle of shower gel for a really cleansing experience. For problem skin, blend 2 drops of Tea Tree in 5ml (a teaspoon) of Jojoba oil
A pale yellow oil with a sweet, aniseed odour. Not to be confused with Bitter Fennel, which should not be used in aromatherapy. This oil is distilled from seeds selected from several East European countries. Its main use outside aromatherapy is in flavourings for aniseed-type liquors, particularly in France. Sweet Fennel, in the form of fennel tea, has long been used to reduce bloating and improve digestion. Try the following massage blend: 2 drops of Sweet Fennel, 1 drop of Bergamot and 1 drop of Lavender blended in 10ml of Sweet Almond oil. Massage into the abdomen, using clockwise strokes. Try soaking in a warm bath containing 1 drop of Sweet Fennel, 1 drop of Cypress and 3 drops of Patchouli, all diluted in a teaspoon of Peach Kernel oil, after a long session at the gym or to improve the appearance of cellulite. Not to be used during pregnancy, by epileptics or those with high blood pressure. Use in moderation at all times.

Expressed from the peel of the Bergamot fruit, this Bergamot oil is "FCF" (Furocoumarin-free also known as bergaptene-free). The bergaptene content of the full version of this oil causes photosensitivity, ie, it should not be used on the skin before exposure to sunlight or UV sunbeds. Absolute Aromas has this Bergamot oil re-distilled in the UK to remove the waxes and terpenes, including bergaptene. After distillation, the oil is clear, compared with the deep green colour of the original oil and is safer to use on the skin. A really special, rounded, citrus aroma, Bergamot is the perfect oil to help lift that Monday-morning feeling any day of the week! Try adding 20 drops to a bottle of unfragranced shower gel to give you get up and go in the mornings. Bergamot is also strongly anti-septic, cleansing and astringent and is therefore ideal in skincare for oily or problem skin
Palmarosa is steam distilled from the wild growing grass of the cymbopogon martinii plant in India. It is one of the best natural sources of geraniol, which has a sweet, rose-like aroma, and is thus very popular with soap and cosmetic manufacturers. Try adding 5 drops of Palmarosa, 2 drops of Ylang Ylang and 2 drops of Sandalwood to 30ml of Peach Kernel Oil for a pampering body oil. To help aid relaxation after a stressful day, blend 2 drops of Palmarosa and 1 drop of Geranium in a teaspoonful of Sweet Almond Oil and swish into a warm bath. Soak for at least 10 minutes.

The two main types of Benzoin are Siam (styrax tonkinensis) and Sumatra (styrax benzoin). The Sumatran type is much cheaper to produce, and coarser than the superior Siam quality. As Benzoin is a resinoid, it comes in solid form. Absolute Aromas has used an odourless diluent - benzyl benzoate - to liquefy it so that it is practical to use. Even diluted to 40%, it can still solidify easily and the bottle may be warmed in the hands before use. Benzoin is balsamic, warming and penetrating but gentle. It is useful for all the family, particularly during the winter months when it is ideal for use in steam inhalations as well as in baths or massage blends for dry or weather-worn skin. In a steam inhalation try blending with Eucalyptus (especially Eucalyptus Radiata for children), Tea Tree or Frankincense. As a treat for weather-worn skin, (gardeners, windsurfers, etc take note!) add a 2 drops each of Benzoin, Lavender and Orange to a jar of unfragranced hand cream or to 10ml of Sweet Almond oil and massage in thoroughly.
Galbanum oil is steam distilled from the resin of Ferula trees which grow wild in the Middle East, particularly Iran It has an intensely fresh, green aroma with a woody base note and has been used as incense in several cultures. In aromatherapy, Galbanum is prized for its use on the skin and is a useful addition to any skincare preparations. For oily, problem skin, try a weekly steam inhalation with 2 drops of Galbanum and 1 drop of Lemon. Add the essential oils to a bowl of just boiled water, cover the head with a towel, lean slightly towards the bowl and breathe normally for 10 minutes. Alternatively, blend the same quantities of essential oil with 10ml of Jojoba or Hazelnut carrier oils and apply daily. Galbanum is mostly used by the perfume industry as a fixative and it is a refreshing yet lasting essential oil to diffuse. Try 3 drops of Galbanum, 1 drop of Geranium and 2 drops of Bergamot in a burner or diffuser.

In common with other Eucalyptus species, Eucalyptus Citriodora (Lemon-scented Eucalyptus) is originally from Australia but is now cultivated mainly in China and Brazil. It is often used as a minor ingredient in soap and detergent perfumes to add freshness and is commonly the active ingredient in natural insect repellents. Eucalyptus Radiata and Globulus have a higher pinene content and are therefore more useful in steam inhalations. Use 8-10 drops of Eucalyptus Citriodora in a diffuser or burner to ward off insects (try placing the battery-operated Aroma-Mouse under the table at outdoors parties). Alternatively, dilute 5 drops of Eucalyptus Citriodora in 10ml Absolute Aromas Coconut oil (do not use the unfractionated or solid version)
The crude version is a heavy, sticky oil very high in vitamins and minerals and particularly suited to weathered or mature skin. Each oil can be traced back to the farm where the plant was grown, through each stage of production and finally to the beautiful finished product. The organic range has been sourced from many reputable farms around the world. Absolute Aromas have visited many of the farms themselves, in order to ensure that the high levels of quality and purity that have made Absolute Aromas stand out in the marketplace, remain at the forefront of their company ethos. This oil is pale blue/green in colour. England is the top source for this wonderful, all-round soothing oil. The small flower heads used are labour-intensive to grow and pick and yield very little essential oil, which explains the high price. Along with Lavender, Roman Chamomile can be described as a panacea in aromatherapy and is one of the most useful and popular of all essentail oils. Being one of the gentler oils, it is safe for use on all the family, except during early pregnancy. Try blending 4 drops of Chamomile and 4 drops of Lavender in 2 teaspoonfuls of Sunflower oil and adding to a cool bath for dry, sensitive skin, to encourage relaxation or ease general aches & pains. Incorporate a steam facial into your weekly skincare routine. After cleansing, add 2 drops of Chamomile and 1 drop of Geranium to a bowl of just-boiled water, drape a towel across your head and shoulders, lean over the bowl and allow the vapours to penetrate your skin. Pat your face dry and apply a moisturiser.
There are hundreds of varieties of Eucalyptus; Radiata has a sweeter, more rounded aroma and is less likely to irritate the skin than the more common Eucalyptus Globulus. Radiata can be used in all of the instances where Globulus would be appropriate and may therefore be the preferred Eucalytpus for children, etc. Eucalyptus is well-known for its clearing and anti-septic properties and is thus extremely useful during the winter months. It can be very effective in a steam inhalation to help congestion. Try adding 2 drops Eucalyptus, 1 drop Roman Chamomile and 1 drop Lavender to a bowl of just-boiled water. Lean over the bowl (not too close) with a towel covering your head and inhale the vapours for a few minutes. Alternatively, blend the same oils in two teaspoons of Sweet Almond oil and massage into the chest and back. Blended with Citronella or Cedarwood in an oil burner, Eucalyptus can help maintain an insect-free BBQ! Alternatively, try the lemon-scented Eucalyptus Citriodora as a very powerful natural insect-repellent.

This organic oil is steam distilled from the whole plant. It is not easy to produce as the plant is susceptible to rust, making the organic oil very rare. Geranium is an excellent balancing and uplifting oil for all-round use and is especially popular with women. Try blending 1 drop of Geranium with 2 drops of Lavender and 2 drops of Mandarin in a teaspoon of Sweet Almond oil for use as a relaxing, refreshing bath or massage oil. Alternatively, blend the same oils with two teaspoons of Apricot Kernel oil for a special hydrating body moisturiser with a delicious aroma. In a diffuser or burner, Geranium blends very well with the citrus oils. It is deodorising, cleansing and uplifting as well as having quite good insect-repellent properties.
There are three main types of rosemary. The best one for aromatherapy use is the eucalyptol (cineol) chemotype, from Tunisia, Morocco and Italy. The camphor chemotype comes from Spain, and the verbenone chemotype comes from Algeria and Corsica. The latter is contra-indicated due to neuro-toxicity. Absolute Aromas supplies the finest quality Tunisian Rosemary, which is the superior product. Rosemary is the classic "get up and go" oil. Try adding 3 drops of Rosemary, 2 drops of Lemon and 1 drop of Peppermint to a tepid bath before an important occasion. Adding a few drops to the final rinsing water for dark hair can help keep a natural shine. Do not use Rosemary during the first 4 months of pregnancy.
Also known as Orange Blossom or Neroli Bigarade, this essential oil is distilled from the flowers of the cultivated Bitter Orange tree. The Orange flowers must be distilled immediately after picking, as they decay very quickly. Tunisia is the most highly regarded producer of this exotic floral oil. This delightful oil has been carefully distilled in Tunisia with brand new, top quality equipment by skilled and experienced distillers. The difference is apparent in the quality. The Neroli in this product is 100% pure and natural. For your convenience, it has been diluted to 5% in Coconut Oil, a wonderfully light moisturising oil. It can be used directly on the skin as a perfume or combined with other oils as a massage or bath blend. Try wearing one drop behind each ear before an important interview. A few drops added to your favourite facial oil will also benefit any skincare routine.
There are three types of mandarin oil, green, yellow and red. These colours do not refer to the colour of the oil, but the ripeness of the fruit when they are expressed. Absolute Aromas has selected yellow mandarin, for its wonderful zestiness which is distinct from the more common red oils. Sicily is the top source for these oils. Mandarin has a sweet, familiar aroma and is considered one of the gentler oils making it popular for use by pregnant women and on children in very low dilutions. After a hard day, try soaking in a bath containing 3 drops of Mandarin, 3 drops of Geranium and 2 drops of Patchouli all blended in a teaspoon of Peach Kernel oil. If pregnant, a gentle massage of "the bump" using 1 drop of Mandarin in a teaspoon of Peach Kernel is always pleasant. As with all essential oils, extra care must be taken during pregnancy, particularly during the first trimester. If in doubt, seek medical assistance, or consult a qualified aromatherapist.
Melissa is one of the most adulterated and copied essential oils and genuine Melissa oil makes up only a small fraction of the amount that is sold commercially. Absolute Aromas also stocks a True Melissa but, as the cost is so prohibitive, we produce this blend of essential oils to resemble the aroma. The blend includes Lemon, Lemongrass and Citronella among others. As this oil is already a blend, it makes an ideal diffusing oil in its own right. However, it complements Cedarwood, Rosemary, Geranium, Lavender, Ylang Ylang or the spice oils. For a refreshing, cleansing aroma, try 5 drops of Melissa Type with 2 drops of Rosemary in a burner or diffuser. For a smoother, more floral aroma, try 2 drops of Geranium with 4 drops of Melissa Type or 3 drops of Lavender with 4 drops of Melissa Type. As its components are oils high in insect-repellent chemicals, Melissa Type is also very good at keeping flying pests at bay. For this, try blending 5 drops of Melissa Type with 2 drops of Cedarwood in a burner or diffuser.
Rose has been highly prized for centuries. There are over 10, 000 types of cultivated rose, many of which are extensively used in toiletries for both men and women. It is extremely difficult to extract oil from the petals of the rose. The two main ways are first, solvent extraction of a concrete which is then produced into an absolute, and second distillation to produce an essential oil. Production of an absolute gives a better yield, but distillation gives a much finer fragrance. It can solidify easily and the bottle may be warmed in the hands before use. Rose Otto ("Otto" comes from the Ottoman Empire) is the distilled oil, produced by water or steam distillation from very fresh petals. The fragility of the petals necessitates great skill in production. Absolute Aromas has selected this rose otto for its purity and quality. Before an important evening out, try soaking in a tepid/warm bath containing 2 drops of Petitgrain, 2 drops of Rose Otto and 1 drop of Bergamot, all blended in a teaspoonful of Coconut oil. Blend the following oils in 10ml of Peach Kernel oil for a delicious-smelling massage oil to help you sleep: 1 drop of Petitgrain, 2 drops of Rose Otto and 2 drops of Lavender. Do not use during the first four months of pregnancy.

This organic essential oil is distilled in July from the flowering tops and foliage. Whilst easy to produce, the essential oils yield is quite low. The pungent, herbaceous aroma of Clary Sage has a strongly uplifting yet soothing effect on the mind. In times of worry, try soaking in a warm bath containing 2 drops of Clary Sage, 2 drops of Geranium and 3 drops of Lavender, all diluted in a teaspoon of Apricot Kernel oil. An excellent relaxing massage oil can be made by blending 1 drop of Clary Sage, 1 drop of Roman Chamomile and 2 drops of Sandalwood in 10ml of Sweet Almond oil. It is important to remember that whilst essential oils are being used, it is wise not to drink alcohol. This is particularly applicable when using Clary Sage. Do not use Clary Sage during pregnancy
Extracted by steam distillation of the leaves of this shrub, which is distantly related to Tea Tree, Niaouli, Myrtle, etc., Manuka essential oil is relatively new but gaining in popularity in the Northern Hemisphere. Its anti-septic properties have a long history of use by the Maoris and bees that feed on the bush produce a Manuka honey, which is prized for its soothing effect on sore throats. Manuka essential oil contains an unusual chemical
An excellent citrus fruit from Sicily. Absolute Aromas has consistent high quality in its range of citrus oils and Lemon is no exception. As with all citrus oils, this is somewhat phototoxic, and should be used with caution before exposure to sunlight or UV beds. This tangy oil has a clearing effect and so is particularly useful when recovering from general winter ills. It is very effective used in an oil burner. Try adding 2 drops of Lemon, 2 drops of Lavender and 1 drop of Geranium to the water in an oil burner when feeling under the weather. For a warming bath on a cold, winter night use 2 drops of Lemon, 2 drops of Ylang Ylang and 1 drop of Sandalwood diluted in a teaspoon of Sweet Almond oil.
A thick, sticky oil extremely high in Vitamin E and therefore very useful when added to blends for its anti-oxidant action. Use neat on small areas of extremely dry, weathered skin. Use either on its own or as a carrier oil, blended with a few drops of Absolute Aromas essential oils. Avoid use on those with a wheat allergy. Ingredients: Triticum vulgare.
Coriander essential oil is distilled from the ripe seeds (fruit) of the coriander herb. It is cultivated all over Europe, particularly in Russia. The oil is colourless-to-yellow and has a pleasant smell. Another essential oil can be produced from coriander by the steam-distillation of the fresh and dried leaves. This oil has one main constituent - Decyl Aldehyde - quite different from the seed oil, which has a high percentage of Linalol. The seed oil is far safer for aromatherapy use. When convalescing or generally lacking appetite, try a daily abdomen massage with 1 drop of Coriander and 2 drops of Bergamot blended in two teaspoons of Peach Kernel oil. Always massage the abdomen in a clockwise direction. Try 2 drops of Coriander and 2 drops of Ginger, diluted in one teaspoon of Coconut oil and added to a warm bath to lift your spirits and ease general aches and pains. It is important to remember that whilst essential oils are being used, it is wise not to drink alcohol. This is particularly applicable when using Coriander. Use in moderation at all times.

There are several types of oil produced from the Juniper plant. One is the superior quality Juniperberry oil, made from the berries and the other main one, often referred to as "Juniper" oil, is an inferior product distilled from the twigs and leaves. The juniper fruits are widely used for gin production. Some juniper oils are produced as a by-product of the fermentation process. Absolute Aromas organic Juniperberry oil is steam distilled from premier-grade juniper berries, giving an excellent, high quality oil, ideal for aromatherapy. The organic berries are hand picked from the fields, an occupation that is not regarded highly by the workers therefore making increasingly hard to produce organic Juniperberries. Juniperberry is useful after any period of indulgence - try making the following body massage oil a New Year resolution: Blend together 30ml of Apricot Kernel oil, 4 drops of Juniperberry, 4 drops of Rosemary and 3 drops of Geranium. Apply daily, preferably in the morning. Not to be used during pregnancy or by those with kidney disorders. Best used within a year of opening.

Distilled from the leaves and twigs of a tree in the same family as Tea Tree and Niaouli, Cajeput is also strongly anti-septic and has a camphoraceous aroma. Unlike its more common relatives, it has a high Cineol content which makes it skin-sensitising for some individuals. It should not therefore be used in the bath. Cajeput is a useful addition to steam inhalations to relieve symptoms of colds and other winter chills. Add six drops to a bowl of just-boiled water, cover the head with a towel and breathe normally for up to ten minutes. Cajeput is a common ingredient in pharmaceuticals and dentistry as an antiseptic. For problem skin, try 1 drop of Cajeput blended with 5ml (1 teaspoon) of Jojoba and apply twice daily (provided no skin irritation is experienced).

Originally from Europe, this plant was introduced to the USA and almost immediately became popular with the American public as an alternative to Peppermint for toothpaste, chewing gum, etc. It has since found new favour in Europe but the USA is still both the main producer and consumer. The essential oil is steam distilled from the flowering tops of the herb and its aroma is green yet warm and sweet. Spearmint essential oil can be used wherever Peppermint would be used and is believed to have a less powerful effect, perhaps making it more suitable for children, the elderly, etc. To keep a clear head, try 2 drops of Spearmint, 1 drop of Rosemary and 1 drop of Eucalyptus in a burner or diffuser. The same essential oils are ideal for use in the car - Absolute Aromas stocks AromAbout, a car aromatherapy diffuser. Alternatively, place the drops of essential oil onto cotton wool and leave in the car.

Acknowledged as the best quality Peppermint available, English Peppermint is at the luxury end of the market. The normal American mentha piperita tends to go into products such as toothpaste and confectionery. English peppermint (also known as Mitcham Peppermint) is used for after-dinner mints and mint liqueurs. It is a much smoother, fuller and more rounded oil than the standard product. It has an unusually high content of methylesters (giving excellent body and sweetness) and a modest content of the bitter tasting ketone, Organic Peppermint is susceptible to
Rose has been highly prized for centuries. There are over 10, 000 types of cultivated rose, many of which are extensively used in toiletries for both men and women. It is extremely difficult to extract oil from the petals of the rose. The two main ways are first, solvent extraction of a concrete which is then produced into an absolute, and second, distillation to produce an essential oil. Production of an absolute gives a better yield, but distillation gives a much finer fragrance. Rosa Centifolia, and its close relatives, are cultivated widely in Morocco to produce a rose concrete, from which an absolute is extracted. The product is also known as "rose de mai absolute". The yield of absolute from Rosa Centifolia is somewhat higher than for the Turkish and Bulgarian Rosa Damascena, whereas the yield of the distilled oil is somewhat lower. Thus it is common to find the absolutes coming from Morocco and the distilled oils coming from Turkey and Bulgaria. The Rose Absolute used in this product is 100% pure and natural. For your convenience, it has been diluted to 5% in Coconut Oil, a wonderfully light moisturising oil. It can be used directly on the skin as a perfume or combined with other oils as a massage or bath blend. Try blending 6 drops of Rose Absolute 5% Dilution with 1 drop of Patchouli and 2 drops of Benzoin and add to the water for a warm, pampering bath. Do not use in the first four months of pregnancy.
The crude version is a heavy, sticky oil very high in vitamins and minerals and particularly suited to weathered or mature skin. The refined version is lighter and more versatile but less rich in nutrients. They are both ideally suited for use in facial blends or for adding to blends to boost the vitamin content.
Ylang Ylang means "flower of flowers" and is extracted by steam distillation from the flowers of a tropical tree that grows in the Indian Ocean. When Ylang Ylang is distilled, the first fraction is separated out and called Ylang Ylang Extra. The next fraction is known as Ylang Ylang I, then II and finally III. Ylang Ylang Extra is very highly regarded and finds its way into top quality perfumes. Though the chemical profiles are very similar between the oils, the Extra is richer in many of the top notes. Absolute Aromas has selected this exquisite Ylang Ylang Extra from the Comores Island in the Indian Ocean, where the climate and soil is ideal for excellent quality Ylang Ylang. For a sensual massage blend, mix 2 drops of Ylang Ylang Extra and 2 drops of Sandalwood in 10ml of Sweet Almond oil. Exotic, the Absolute Aromas aromatherapy blend is based on this combination. Ylang Ylang is one of the most popular essential oils for diffusing. It has a wonderfully exotic aroma in its own right but blends well with Sandalwood, Bergamot, Rose, Jasmine, May Chang or Sweet Orange.
It has an unusually high content of methylesters (giving excellent body and sweetness) and a modest content of the bitter tasting ketone, Menthone. Peppermint, as used in after-dinner mints, is popular after a bout of over-indulgence. Blend 1 drop of Peppermint with 5ml of Sweet Almond oil for a comforting tummy rub (massage in a clockwise direction!). Try adding 4 drops to a bowl of warm water for a wonderfully refreshing footbath. Also a good insect repellent
Expressed Lime oil is produced in the same way as other citrus fruits, by pressing the peel of the fruit to extract the oil. However, Expressed Lime Oil is extremely photo-toxic, and so should be avoided. Absolute Aromas does not sell this product. The alternative is Distilled Lime Oil, which is by far the most prominent type. Most people prefer the distilled oil's aroma as it more closely resembles the fruit itself. Distilled Lime oil is widely used for flavouring whereas the expressed oil tends to be preferred by the perfume industry. The two main sources of Lime oil are Mexico and Peru. This oil is from Mexico, and is a delightful oil, very reminiscent of fresh limes - a wonderful revitalising oil. Refresh aching feet by adding 1 drop each of Lime, Lemon and Geranium to a bowl of warm water and soak feet for at least five minutes. Add 1 drop each of Lime, Lavender and Neroli to the water in a new plant spray and use as a natural room spray. Avoid polished surfaces and plants.
This oil is pale blue/green in colour. England is the top source for this wonderful, all-round soothing oil and Absolute Aromas has selected an oil of consistently high quality, grown and distilled in the UK.
Sweet Marjoram (Origanum Majorana) is well known as a culinary herb cultivated in gardens all over the world. Steam distillation of the herb Origanum Majorana, gives this strongly aromatic oil vaguely reminiscent of Nutmeg and Cardamom. Egypt is the prime source for this oil. It is important to differentiate between the various types of Marjoram, Thyme and Oregano as their names tend to get very confusing, even to experts. Sweet Marjoram Essential Oil makes up only a small proportion of the Marjoram oils produced, most of which tend to be Spanish Marjoram. Spanish Marjoram (Oregano) is a completely different species, Thymus Masticina, and the so-called Wild Marjoram is the common garden herb, Origanum Vulgare, cultivated all over the world. Did you know?Used by the ancient Greeks in medicines, perfumes and other toiletries. Specific Safety Advice. Do not use during pregnancy
Also known as West Indian Bay, this Bay is not to be confused with Laurus Nobilis or Sweet Bay which is a different species. The fruits of Bay are an ingredient of Allspice. The essential oil is extracted from the leaves of the plant but is also both warming and aromatic. West Indian Bay is the main ingredient of the old-fashioned Bay Rum hair tonic which was said to stimulate hair growth and help with greasy or problem hair. For a home-made hair tonic, try adding two or three drops of Bay to your usual shampoo or conditioner. Alternatively blend 3 drops with a teaspoon of vodka (to dilute), add to warm water and use as the final rinse after shampooing. Bay has a high Eugenol content which makes it irritating to mucous membranes; it should not therefore be used in the bath and should be used in moderation and not on young children. For a winter-warming aroma, try adding 2 drops of Bay, 1 drop of Cinnamon and 3 drops of Sweet Orange to a burner or diffuser.
There are several different types of basil oil. Absolute Aromas has selected a "True Sweet Basil Oil" (Ocimum Basilicum) known as Linalol type. This is the safest and most pleasant of the Basil oils used in aromatherapy. A stimulating and clearing oil, useful when concentration is needed or when feeling tired. Try adding 1 drop of Basil and 3 drops of Lemon to the water in an oil burner to help create the right atmosphere for hours of exam revision or paperwork! A blend of 1 drop each of Basil and Lavender in 10ml of Sweet Almond oil makes a good abdomen massage oil. Always massage the abdomen in a clockwise direction. Do not use during pregnancy and only in moderation, especially by those with sensitive skin.

It is not very easy to produce as it is a very sticky oil, and can result in a low yield. The distinctive aroma of Patchouli makes it familiar to many people and may explain its popularity in perfumes and skincare products. Try blending 1 drop of Patchouli, 1 drop of Geranium and 2 drops of Bergamot in 10ml of Apricot Kernel oil to use as a facial oil. A few drops each of Patchouli and Lavender added to an unfragranced handcream or vegetable oil, make a treat for neglected hands and feet.

Petitgrain oil is steam distilled from the twigs and leaves of the Bitter Orange tree, Citrus Aurantium subspecies Amara. This is the same tree from which Neroli (Orange Blossom) and Bitter Orange essential oils are produced. The Paraguayan oil is distilled exclusively from the bitter-sour subvariety of Bitter Orange trees which grow both semi-wild and cultivated throughout the interior of Paraguay. Production of the oil is dominated by Paraguay with high quality and cost effective production. Before an important evening out, try soaking in a tepid/warm bath containing 3 drops of Petitgrain, 1 drop of Rosemary and 2 drops of Bergamot, all blended in a teaspoonful of Coconut oil. Blend the following oils in 10ml of Peach Kernel oil for a delicious-smelling massage oil to help you sleep: 1 drop of Petitgrain, 2 drops of Neroli and 2 drops of Lavender.
This is Eucalyptus 80/85, which refers to the eucalyptol content in the oil (80-85%). Other companies may supply an inferior quality known as 70/75. There are many hundreds of different types of Eucalyptus that contain high levels of eucalyptol, but Globulus is the most popular. The Chinese production
Absolute Aromas' Sandalwood is produced by the Mysore Government. It is the top quality of oil available, and comes from controlled and sustainable supply of trees in the state of Mysore, the traditional centre for Sandalwood. Sandalwood has long been used as a perfume by both men and women and is popularly used in home made massage blends to create a sensual atmosphere. For a wonderfully mellow massage oil, blend 3 drops of Sandalwood, 2 drops of Roman Chamomile and a drop of Frankincense in 20ml of Absolute Aromas' Peach Kernel oil. A drop each of Sandalwood, Geranium and Bergamot in an oil burner can help create a cosy atmosphere.
Citronella comes in two main types - Java and Ceylon. Absolute Aromas has introduced an oil from Sri Lanka, which is the only source of the Ceylon type, produced from the Lenabatu variety of citronella grass. Java-type is produced in many countries other than Indonesia, in particular China. Citronella is very widely used in household cleaning products and insecticides. Citronella has a powerful lemon aroma which blends well with all citrus and woody oils. For a natural air freshener

The best Clary Sage comes from Russia, which is by far the most important producer, although France often plays a significant role in distribution. Absolute Aromas has selected a very high quality oil. The pungent, herbaceous aroma of Clary Sage has a strongly uplifting yet soothing effect on the mind. In times of worry, try soaking in a warm bath containing 2 drops of Clary Sage, 2 drops of Geranium and 3 drops of Lavender, all diluted in a teaspoon of Peach Kernel oil.
This oil is water-distilled from the dried flower-buds of the Clove tree. There are three different oils obtained from the clove tree - leaf, bud and stem. Of these three, bud is the safest to use because it has the lowest Eugenol content, though it is still as high as 60-90%. Clove oil is used extensively in perfumes, cosmetics and dental preparations. Clove Bud oil is recommended for use in a burner or diffuser only, unless otherwise advised by a qualified aromatherapist. To help stave off winter chills, add 1 drop of Clove Bud, 2 drops of Lavender and 2 drops of Bergamot to the water in an oil burner or diffuser and allow the aroma to fill the room. Clove buds have traditionally been used to reduce the pain of toothache. A hot compress using essential oils can also be very comforting. Try adding 1 drop of Clove Bud and 1 drop of Lavender to a bowl of hand-hot water, soak a flannel in the water and wring out. Place the flannel on the affected area and leave until it loses its warmth.
Our Lavender grows between 800 and 1, 000 metres in the foothills of the Alps in the Provence region of France. It has a 44% Linalyl Acetate content indicating a superior quality oil. Its overall Ester content is 50-52%, which gives this exceptionally fine oil its gentle, rounded aroma. Lavender is the most widely used essential oil in aromatherapy, particularly for its relaxing properties. Try placing two drops on a handkerchief by your pillow when you are trying to sleep. As Lavender blends very well with many other oils, try the following: 3 drops of Lavender, 3 drops of Mandarin and 1 drop of Geranium in a teaspoon of Sweet Almond oil added to a warm bath before a long, relaxing soak.

This oil is entirely different from Virginian or Texan Cedarwoods. It comes from the Pine family, as opposed to the Cypress family, and is both chemically and olfactorily distinct. It is thought to be related to the Lebanon Cedars of the Eastern Mediterranean. The oil is distilled from the sawdust or stumps of trees which grow abundantly in the Atlas mountains of Morocco. As with Virginian Cedarwood, this oil should be used in moderation, never be used during pregnancy and it may cause skin irritation in those with sensitive skin. One of the more masculine of essential oils, Cedarwood is popularly used in toiletries for men. For a light, aftershave facial oil add 1 drop of Cedarwood, 2 drops of Patchouli and 2 drops of Bergamot to 15ml of Jojoba oil. To help improve the condition of the scalp and encourage healthy hair, add 3 drops each of Cedarwood and Rosemary to 10ml of Coconut oil (or 5ml Coconut and 5ml Wheatgerm for very dry hair) and massage thoroughly into the scalp. Leave for as long as possible before shampooing out. Cedarwood
This slightly pungent oil, distilled from the partly dried leaves and twigs of Cinnamomum Zeylanicum, is often used in perfumery for its warm, spicy, oriental notes. It has a high level of Eugenol (80-90%) which may cause skin irritation, especially in baths, and thus it is sold only for use in a burner or diffuser, unless otherwise advised by a qualified aromatherapist. Cinnamon has a warming and spicy aroma which blends wonderfully with the citrus oils and other spices such as Clove or Nutmeg. To create the perfect atmosphere over the festive season blend 1 drop of Cinnamon Leaf, 1 drop of Clove Bud and 3 drops of Mandarin in a burner or diffuser. To help lift your spirits if you are feeling under the weather try 1 drop of Cinnamon Leaf, 2 drops of Ylang Ylang and 2 drops of Sweet Orange.
The oil is produced from distillation of the leaves and twigs of the Cypress tree. Much of the production is from pruning the trees that are used as windbreaks in the Mediterranean area. Due to its woody, balsamic smell, Cypress is used extensively in men's toiletries and is therefore popular as an ingredient in home-made blends. For a light, aftershave facial oil, blend 15ml of Jojoba oil with 2 drops of Cypress, 2 drops of Sandalwood and 1 drop of Bergamot. Apply sparingly. Cypress is strongly anti-septic and astringent. Too enthusiastic at the gym?! Add 2 drops of Cypress, 2 drops of Rosemary and 1 drop of Lavender to a bowl of boiling water. Lay a folded flannel in the water, wring and place it on the aching area. (Always check the temperature first!) Alternatively, blend the above oils with a teaspoon of Peach Kernel oil and stir it into a warm bath. Do not use Cypress during the first four months of pregnancy (and only on advice from a qualified aromatherapist thereafter) or with high blood pressure.
Jasmine Absolute can be produced in two main ways, by alcohol extraction from the concrete, or by alcohol extraction from the trays of fat used in enfleurage. The latter process has become impractical and uneconomic, so most absolutes are now produced from concretes. This intensely floral oil is dark orange in colour and somewhat viscous, but very little is required to add the characteristic odour to any blend. For a wonderfully luxurious massage oil, blend 1 drop of Jasmine, 1 drop of Sandalwood and 3 drops of Mandarin in 10ml of Peach Kernel oil. Try blending 1 drop of Jasmine and 1 drop of Neroli in 20ml of Coconut oil and dab a small amount on the wrists as an alternative to perfume. Do not use in the first four months of pregnancy.

Absolute Aromas selected this excellent Israeli product for its clean, fresh odour. Grapefruit has a wonderful, uplifting aroma like many of the citrus oils and is cleansing and refreshing! If in need of a pick-me-up first thing in the morning, try adding 3 drops of Grapefruit, 2 drops of Rosemary and 1 drop of Bergamot, blended in a teaspoon of Sweet Almond oil, to a bath. Alternatively stir the same essential oils into a dose of unfragranced shower gel. To improve the appearance of cellulite, blend 3 drops of Grapefruit and 3 drops of Juniperberry with 15ml of Coconut oil and massage the area vigorously. Try to work in the direction of the heart. In a burner or diffuser, Grapefruit blends well with the other citrus oils and herbs (Rosemary, Clary Sage, Thyme, Lavender, etc).
The East African origin refers mainly to Somalian resin, but some of it also comes out of Kenya. Olibanum comes from the bark of the boswellia species, which is prompted to exude resin when incisions are made in the bark. This oil is distilled in France from top quality resin. European distillation allows better control over production than oils distilled at source. Frankincense has a smoky, woody aroma and is considered by many diverse cultures as the most spiritual and prized of all essential oils. Its classic use is for prayer or meditation as well as in skincare preparations. For a luxurious, nourishing facial moisturiser, blend 2 drops of Frankincense with 1 drop of Rose (preferably Otto) in 10ml of Evening Primrose or Borage oil and apply sparingly. Try 2 drops of Frankincense and 2 drops of Bergamot in a burner or diffuser to help quiet the mind after a hectic day in the office. Alternatively blend the same oils in a teaspoon of Peach Kernel oil and add the blend to a warm bath.

St John's Wort is a soothing oil with many therapeutic properties. Our St John's Wort is created by infusing the flowers in Sesame Oil, this is also known as a 'macerated oil'. The whole plant is said to have antibiotic properties. It is good for dry and sensitive skin, insect bites, and bruises. It also soothes stiff muscles and joints and is said to be a hair stimulant.
Ylang Ylang I contains more of the heavier, floral base notes. Ylang Ylang III tends to go into soaps and everyday products. Absolute Aromas has selected this exquisite Ylang Ylang from the Comores Island in the Indian Ocean, where the climate and soil is ideal for excellent quality Ylang Ylang. For a sensual massage blend, mix 2 drops of Ylang Ylang and 2 drops of Sandalwood in 10ml of Sweet Almond oil.

Myrrh, like Frankincense, is distilled from a resin. It is extremely viscous, and therefore more difficult to use. Absolute Aromas has used a larger dropper for this oil, but with time it may solidify. The only solution is to warm the oil gently in the hands before use, and to be patient! Myrrh has acquired a reputation as a healer over the centuries and as such can be beneficial when used in inhalations to help ease winter ills. Place 1 drop each of Myrrh, Benzoin and Lavender in a bowl of boiling water. Drape a towel across your head and shoulders and inhale the vapours for a few minutes. Try blending 1 drop of Myrrh, 2 drops of Geranium and 1 drop of Peppermint in 10ml of Coconut oil to use as a massage oil on neglected feet. Do not use Myrrh during pregnancy.
