Pot up penstemon plants & grow them on in frost free conditions until plants are well grown. Pinch out the growing tips while plants are still small to encourage bushier growth. When plants are well developed acclimatise them to outdoor conditions over 7 to 10 days before planting them outdoors into borders & patio containers. Grow penstemon in a sunny or semi shaded position on fertile well drained soil. Penstemons can tolerate dry soils once established but dislike heavy soils that are particularly cold & wet in winter. Improve heavy soils by adding plenty of coarse grit prior to planting.

Grow raspberry plants in a sunny position in any well drained soil. Prior to planting incorporate plenty of well rotted manure or garden compost into the soil. The stems of summer fruiting raspberries will require support. Before planting prepare a framework of wires stretched horizontally between two sturdy 1.8m posts. Autumn fruiting varieties will not require supports. Plant raspberry canes in a row against the wire supports allowing a distance of 60cm between plants. Water well. Canes should be pruned to 15cm above ground level immediately after planting to encourage more shoots to be produced.

Water well for the first year until plants are fully established. Loosely tie the stems of summer fruiting raspberries in to their support wires as they grow. When berries begin to develop place a net over the plants to protect the crop from birds. Apply a mulch of well rotted manure or garden compost to the base of the canes in spring. This will help to retain moisture throughout the summer.

Plant strawberry plants in autumn or late spring in a sheltered sunny position in well manured free draining soil. Plant strawberry runners every 45cm in rows spaced at 75cm apart. Spread out their roots & place them in the soil at a level where the crown of the plant is just poking above the surface. Avoid planting them too deeply as this may cause them to rot. Alternatively try growing strawberry plants in hanging baskets or in specially designed strawberry planters for the patio.

Water strawberries frequently throughout the growing season & weed regularly between rows. When growing strawberry plants in baskets & containers they will also need feeding every two weeks. From early summer remove any runners that are produced as these will weaken the plants vigour. Protect the developing fruit from slugs & snails by spreading straw around each plant. Positioning a net over the plants will also prevent crop damage by birds. The netting & straw can be removed after cropping to allow better air flow around the crown of the plant. Mulch strawberry plants with well rotted manure in spring.

Please note: Although strawberry plants will continue to fruit in successive years the crop will become considerably reduced & it is advisable to completely replace strawberry plants every 3 years.
