The SL is the cornerstone of the Never Summer range and its versatility ensures it remains the most popular model. Some updates for 2013/14 include a modified Custom Flight Core which further reduces weight and increases pop and the added VXR Laminate Technology aiding edge response and control. Specification: Profile: Original Rocker Camber Running length: 121 Waist width: 251mm Sidecut radius: Vario 750 – Multiple radius average Setback: Slight Flex (1 soft, 10 stiff): 5 (Specification based on the 155cm board) Note: Base graphic colours may vary Features: Original Rocker Camber Profile provides the best of both profiles in one. The Rocker in the middle provides floatation, mobility and a forgiving feel, with camber extending from the outside of the binding insert areas to the nose and tail for increased edge hold and pop. This defined profile allows easy un-weighting of the contact points for effortless turns but the power and liveliness of camber when the edge is engaged. STS Pre-tensioned Fibreglass is a pre-hardened, layered laminate with added elastomer stringers. This advanced fibreglass provides unmatched strength and performance. Bi-Lite Fibreglass has many of the characteristics of STS Fibreglass with an ultra light glass fibre matrix. Alongside their patented R.C. (Rocker & Camber) profiles, Never Summer has developed their Vario Power Grip Sidecut. This specific sidecut geometry combats the lack of stability and edge hold which is often a side effect of more traditional rocker profiles. Dual carbon V’s have been added to help energy transfer from the effective edge to the tip and tail for the optimum freestyle feel whether in the park or freeriding. Carbon VXR Laminate Technology achieves this increased performance without making the board too stiff for buttering and presses. The Never Summer exclusive NS Custom Flightcore was designed and built in Never Summer’s wood core facility. Combined premium hardwood and ultra light softwood is laminated together with vertical layers of elastomeric vibration dampeners which increase vibration absorption the fast you ride. RDS 2 Dampening System provides the perfect level of vibration absorption and stability. Elastomeric Underfoot Stabilizers are placed directly below the mounting area in order to increase vibration absorption and high speed performance while also reducing fatigue. Produced exclusively for Never Summer, the high density Durasurf Sintered 4501 Base is extremely fast and will provide unmatched performance and durability. True all-round boards are actually pretty few and far between, which is why those of us who like to think we embrace all aspects of snowboarding end up having more than one board. The combination of the mixed profile, flex, shape, dampening and quality means that this board ticks a lot of boxes. As comfortable pressing boxes as it is dropping backcountry cliffs, the SL is an ideal one board quiver for those of us that can’t pick and choose our days on the hill. The price tag attached to Never Summer snowboards is a reflection of their quality. You get what you pay for and with the extra longevity and the true all-mountain performance the Proto provides, it is e
New to the Creamer this winter, an S-Rocker profile ups the ante in the stakes of board control and stability. Conservative early-rise in the nose blends with a mellow 4mm camber through the majority of the running length. The result is increased control and power, but that same old Creamer float. Stomp Guard Titinal inserts run along the edge increasing the Creamer’s ability to shrug-off impacts from hidden nasties. The chances of ripping-out an edge or sustaining a board murdering core-shot are significantly reduced with Stomp Guard. Tapered Fly Tips remove the necessity of bringing the wood core or a TPU spacer to the tips, reducing swing weight and increasing playfulness. Is getting off the piste and into fresh powder is your thing, but you’re reluctant to have a dedicated powder board for the rare occasions you get the goods? To talk about the B 10/30 we need to know a little about the man behind the board, Mr Amplid himself Peter Bauer. Peter started snowboarding in 1984, was sponsored by Burton two years later and was named European Champion five times, World Champion four times and vice World Champion in the combined event (halfpipe, moguls, slalom and downhill) behind a certain Craig Kelly. 16 years at Burton also gave Peter the opportunity to learn his craft. Peter was heavily involved with developing and testing some of the most revolutionary snowboards of the late 80s and 90s and learned a lot from working with the best in the industry. Peter went on to do his own thing and formed Amplid in 2005. Basically Peter Bauer knows how to make a snowboard and how to ride one better than pretty much anyone else on the planet. The B 10/30 is a board he built for himself for his needs. It’s a “no-compromise freeride board that feels right in every terrain, in all snow conditions.” Specification: Profile: S Rocker Profile Description: Camber underfoot with early rise rocker in the nose Shape: Directional Setback: 15 Flex: Medium/Stiff Length cm Effective Edge mm Waist Width mm Recommended Rider weight 163 1190 253 Not stated Note: Die cut base colour combinations may vary and are supplied at random Profile: S Rocker by Amplid combines the stability and power of camber underfoot and through the tail with the easy floatation of early rise rocker. You’d be forgiven for thinking the Hovercraft was a one trick pony. The super directional shape with that stubby tail is definitely designed to make the very most out of those epic days that we all dream about. The stiff tail and mellow-magnetraction provides the stability when snow stops falling. The Hovercraft is designed to be ridden 6-8cm shorter than your average snowboard. Specification: Profile: Directional Rocker Running length: 118cm Waist width: 260mm Sidecut radius: 9.3 Setback: 30 (Specification based on the 156cm board) Note: Base colour combinations may vary and are supplied at random Features: Directional Rocker is designed to reduce the most common kinds of falls that occur when freeriding. It is a hybrid rocker/camber profile with more rocker at the nose than the tail. The increased nose rocker improves float in soft and slushy snow and reduces the chance of nose diving when landing in powder. The less rockered tail maintains power while the slight camber between the bindings increases edge hold and response. By increasing the number of contact points along the edge Mellow Magne-traction improves edge grip. This is especially valuable when combined with a rocker profile as it combats the looser nature of the board which is a result of the raised tip and tail contact points. The benefit of a Blunt Nose shape is the increased surface area at the front of the board without having to increase the board length. Essentially you can ride a shorter board, get the same amount of float, reduced swing weight and increased manoeuvrability. Super light poplar stringers run tip to tail in the Classic Core. With a predictable flex, tons of pop and a buttery board feel this high-performance core delivers a snappy ride with even response. All Jones boards feature full tip-to-tail a FSC Wood Core. Biax is a dual direction, dual layer, stitched fibreglass laminate. Its tensile strength, reliability and snappy response provide a fun and forgiving ride. In an effort to reduce waste, Jones alternate base graphic colours. Be aware that the colour combination on the base may differ from that shown in the picture on boards that feature the Flip Flop Base. Sintered Bases absorb more wax and glide further. The Wood Topsheet dampens the feel of the board and reduces chatter whilst reducing the use of plastic and lacquer. Stronger Edges are a lot more resistant to impact damage than the typical snowboard edge – about 250% more resistant. What Jeremy has done with the Hovercraft is to produce a powder board that can be ridden in all conditions. The short tail and set-back definitely took a little getting used to on the slushy, cruddy snow that I rode it on, but that is part of the appeal. This isn’t your regular snowboard and gives you a gentle nudge to get out of your comfort zone a little and see just what’s possible. Is it for me? For the intermediate to advanced powder junkie that doesn’t want the fun to stop when the fresh snow has been fully tracked out. Remember that the Hovercraft is designed to be ridden 6-8cm shorter than your regular s
The Wonder is a female specific all-mountain board with a penchant for free-ride terrain. The Cross Profile has rocker in the tip and tail to improve float in soft, deep snow and camber been the feet for better control and stability on the hard-pack piste. Built with a directional flex and slight set back, the Wonder is capable of charging as fast as you like whilst retaining freestyle playfulness. Whether you duck the ropes at the top of the lift to ride the slackcountry or regularly hike out of bounds into the sidecountry, you’ll appreciate the float created by Ride’s HighRize Rocker. With slightly more lift at the nose than tail but with a twin sidecut, the Slackcountry is versatile enough to dominate the soft stuff, slash the groomer and easily ride switch. Specification: Profile: HighRize Rocker (Rocker, almost flat, rocker) Running length: 1279mm Waist width: 258mm Sidecut radius: 10800/8300/10800mm Setback: 0.75in Flex (1 soft, 10 stiff): 5 (Specification based on the 164cm board) Features: The most acute rocker profile of all Ride profiles is HighRize Rocker. With a slightly higher rocker in the nose than the tail this shape is really well suited to riding soft, fresh snow due to the increase in float that it provides. Rather than using ABS sidewalls or those made of wood or P-Tex, Ride have developed their proprietary Slimewall sidewalls. These are made from the urethane, which is commonly used in skateboard wheels, and adds maximum dampening to the edge for a smooth ride and durable construction. Hempbrain Top Sheets use far less material by removing the traditional plastic top. Hemp is a fast growing renewable resource that requires little processing and has the benefit of producing strong and light top sheet material. High strength Aspen is combined with lightweight woods and bamboo to produce the Performance Tuned Core. This is the perfect balance between strength and weight saving. Ride use stitched rather than woven fibreglass in their snowboards for a more consistent and therefore stronger construction. Hybrid Glass uses triaxial stitch on top with biaxial on the base for balanced torsion and flex. Fusion 4000 is a sintered base material that is made harder, more durable and faster than the competition. If you think about it the Slackcountry is the board that most of us British snowboarders should be buying. Sure we’d all like a board for every situation, including the powder board that more times than not stays at the bottom of the board bag, or worst still at home - because the chance of getting stung by excess baggage is greater than the chance of scoring knee deep pow all week long. I’m not suggesting we shouldn’t have faith, we should, and we should be prepared. If it dumps and we have the Slackcountry in our bags we will be whooping with joy after every heavenly turn, but when the snow gods don’t answer our prayers we can still blast around the resort making memories for all those ‘wish you were here’ postcards we should be sending home. Is it for me? Rocker profiles definitely make riding in powder easier so the Slackcountry is great for intermediate powder hunters. It has a fairly wide waist as standard, so as well as increasing the surface area and therefore improving the float it’s also ideal for riders with larger feet.
At only 2.3kg* the Amplid LAB Carbon Split is the lightest splitboard on planet earth. It’s lightweight construction and freeride geometry make easy work of long tours and big mountain lines. Freeride and big mountain freestyle is what the Flagship is built for. You just have to watch Jeremy Jones dropping the hardest lines in the most unforgiving of terrain to get an idea of what he requires from the snowboard he rides. The C.Slasher works really well all over the resort but really comes into its own in powder. The rocker nose, flat base and 20mm tapered tail cause the tail to sink and allows the nose to float naturally, transforming tiring powder days into the most memorable ones you’ve ever had. The zero camber (flat) section running through the middle and tail of the board retains power for slashing and stomping landings. Flat Kick is the shape given to the profile of the nose and tail. Most boards have a gradual curve from the contact points to the tip/tail. Capita found that while that works well with a traditional camber profile, it does not work so well with the raised contact points of a reverse camber profile. Flat Kick essentially adds responsiveness and speed to edge-to-edge turning. Capita have added an ABS sidewall to the centre of a pull poplar core to create the Touring Core + ABS. This addition would allow you to split the board down the middle, turning it into a touring splitboard, without risking water damage to the core. Rather than applying resin by hand in the manufacturing process, Capita use a mechanized dispensing system to ensure a consistent application and eliminate the chance of dry spots which can lead to de-lamination. In addition they apply fibreglass to the top and bottom of the core to reduce the risk of water damage. Custom Weave Fiberglass Configuration increases the performance of the resin and fibreglass which allows for a decrease in the thickness of the wood core. The result is reduced weight without the loss of performance. Running through the board from the tip of the nose to just past the front inserts are 2x30mm Carbon Fibre Beams. Specification: Profile: Mid-Riser Profile Description: Flat between the binding inserts and rocker outside the inserts to the tip and tail Shape: Tapered Twin Setback: Centred Flex: Medium Length cm Effective Edge mm Waist Width mm Recommended Rider weightkg 163 1165 260 Not stated Note: Die cut base colour combinations may vary and are supplied at random Profile: Mid-Riser is the best camber solution for those regularly riding switch in powder. A flat, zero camber section runs between the inserts providing stability on hard packed snow. Mellow early rise rocker propagates from the inserts into the nose and tail to aid flotation and increase nimbleness. Features: The P10 Superlight Wood Core is the industry standard for lightweight; durable and versatile performance. Jekyll & Hyde Geometry (JHG) is the result of experimental shapes that maximise the effective edge and square centimetres in a minimum board length. The results are unsinkable but nimble powder boards and sawn-off jib decks with huge pop. Increasing the width of the board increases the surface area meaning you can reduce the length and not sacrifice flotation in powder. For optimal performance when riding powder planes at high speed the Elliptic Powder Nose even keeps the tip from submarining when you can’t fully open the throttle. Magma Edge Absorber is a thin strip of rubber between the sidewall and the metal edge to iron out any unwanted bumps and vibrations. Tapered Fly Tips remove the necessity of bringing the wood core or a TPU spacer to the tips, reducing swing weight and increasing playfulness.
DEMO SNOWBOARDS This is a demo snowboard and we have categorised it as follows: This is the ultimate quiver powder board for snowboarders with swallow-tail-phobia. Many hours were spent, and several gallons of coffee drunk, conceiving a snowboard shape that could generate the Morning Glory’s mind altering floatation, regular and switch. Butter across a loaded Japanese snow mushroom; launch a frontside 180 into a BC pillow line; with the Pillow Talk the line between freestyle and freeride snowboarding is utterly blurred. The Pillow Talk is only 156cm long, but its chubby 26.7cm waist and large spatula-like tips with their extended blend zones, create an excessive amount of floatation. The FT (Family Tree) Flight Attendant was developed by the likes of Terje Haakonsen and Nicolas Muller to be a freeride/powder board that suits their brand of creative freestyle riding in natural terrain. The Balanced Freeride Geometry means that the board rides like a twin board on the piste and the tapered directional shape provides effortless float in soft snow. Specification: Profile: S-Rocker Setback: 35mm Flex: Mid stiff - Stiff Length CM Running Length MM Effective Edge MM Waist Width MM Rider Weightkg 159 1150 1210 250 66-84 162 1180 1240 254 75-93 Features: The Channel mounting system is a game-changer and boasts a number of benefits. The main one for us is infinite adjustability which allows limitless stance width, angles and toe-heel options. Others include and 3 year warranty on all boards that feature the channel, half the set-up time, compatibility with other leading binding brands, not just Burton and it allows for a lower board profile under the bindings (apparent on boards featuring Squeezebox and Filet-O-Flex). The classic Directional shape is designed with a slightly nose than tail to concentrate pop in the tail while giving you plenty of float and control for any terrain or conditions. A Tapered shape means the nose is wider than the tail. This provides smooth turn entry and exit, stability at speed and enhanced float in deep snow. To be able to ride in deep snow you need both float and speed. S-Rocker combines rocker, which extends from the nose to under your front foot in order to increase float, with camber between your feet to maintain stability in variable conditions. The patent pending technology of Squeezebox improves pop and performance through a balance of thicker, more powerful core sections with thinner, more flexible sections. The classic Squeezebox profile provides the perfect balance of energ
