The life of famed Chinese poet Yu Tat Fu is dramatized in the 1988 drama When Tat Fu Was Young, from acclaimed director Eddie Fong. Also known as Cherry Blossoms, the film is narrated from the perspective of the adult Tat Fu (Chow Yun Fat), who recalls the years he spent in Japan as a youth circa 1913. During a chance encounter, the young Tat Fu (Terence Fok) meets Lung (Sachiko Nakamura), who would become the focus of his obsessive love. Meanwhile, Tat Fu must contend with discrimination from the Japanese, & continuing tension of the ongoing Sino-Japanese conflict. Tat Fu also finds brotherhood with Isao, an older Japanese student, but when Lung enters their lives, their friendship gives way to a bitter romantic rivalry.
