From the moment Qiuci princess Lak Ka (Katy Kung) & Sung crown prince Chiu Sing Chi (Stanley Cheung) laid eyes on one another, they each knew they were in love. Unfortunately, before they could tell the other how they felt, Lak Ka is turned into a spirit bird by a curse. Dejected, Lak Ka can only try her best to protect Sing Chi in her current form. In the meantime, Sing Chi, suspicious of his uncle, sends trusted official Fong Sam (Kristal Tin) to uncover whether hes attempting to take over the throne. His twin sister So Sei (also Kristal Tin) volunteers to stand in as her brother at home. At this inopportune time, So Sei re-encounters her first love, Yuen Sam Yeung (Raymond Wong).

Thanks to his efforts in saving a statue of Lok Pun during a flood, scholar Yi Dan (Wayne Lai) forms an inseparable link with the deity. After miraculously coming back to life after dying, Yi Dan returns home to his wife Wan Chu (Sonija Kwok), who nags him about passing the imperial exam. A disappointed Yi Dan goes to drown his sorrows at the local brothel, where he meets Yat Ban Heung, who looks identical to his wife. Entranced by the courtesan, Yi Dan asks Lok Pun to switch his wifes spirit with Yat Ban Heungs.

While on his way to meet the family of his betrothed, Hung Do Dan (Eliza Sam), poor scholar Cheung Chen (Bosco Wong) rescues fish spirit Lau Yi, plunging himself into mortal danger in the process. Unwilling to let her savior die, Lau Yi saves Cheung Chen, angering the water world & the underworld. She follows him to the Hung household, where she witnesses the spoilt Do Dan refusing to marry Cheung Chen, who she deems to be too poor. Looking to make Cheung Chens life as hard as possible, Do Dan sets him up at a dilapidated shack. Meanwhile, Lau Yi, hoping to get to know Cheung Chen, takes on Do Dans appearance to spend time with him.
