New writer-director Oliver Chans comedy-drama Still Human reveals a slice of Hong Kong life through its warm depiction of the bond between a Filipino domestic helper & her grouchy disabled employer. Produced by Fruit Chan, the film shines a light on the experiences of migrant workers & those on the socioeconomic margins in Hong Kong. Anthony Wong won Best Actor at the 38th Hong Kong Film Awards for his performance as the middle-aged wheelchair user who gradually warms to his new helper. Still Human also garnered Best New Director for Oliver Chan & Best New Actor for leading actress Crisel Consunji.
Crabby middle-aged pensioner Cheong Wing (Anthony Wong), who became paralyzed after a construction accident, uses a wheelchair & needs assistance in his daily life. His new domestic helper Evelyn (Crisel Consunji) is a former nurse & aspiring photographer who left a bad marriage & has come to Hong Kong to make money for her family. The two get off to a bad start due to the language barrier & Cheong Wings cantankerous, nitpicking personality, but over time, they begin to bond. These two people who have lost their hope & dreams unexpectedly find a kindred soul in each other.
