Based on renowned director Aoyama Shinjis own novel, Sad Vacation is a slow-brewing, stylishly lensed, & curiously scored meditation on loneliness, anger, & reconciliation. Like Aoyamas previous films Eureka & Helpless, Sad Vacation is set in the southern city of Kitakyushu, exploring the light & dark sides of human nature through the lives of troubled marginal characters trying to escape themselves. Aoyama teams up again with acclaimed actor Asano Tadanobu & NANA star Miyazaki Aoi, who previously starred in Helpless & Eureka, respectively. The film also co-stars actress Ishida Eri ( Hibi) & popular actor Odagiri Joe ( Tokyo Tower) in his first collaboration with Asano since 2003s Bright Future.
A man of few words & reactions, Kenji (Asano Tadanobu) moonlights as the driver for a human trafficking ring. He forms an odd family of sorts with an orphaned Chinese boy he took in & Yuri (Tsuji Kaori), the mentally troubled sister of his late gangster friend. One day, Kenji encounters his mother, Chiyoko (Ishida Eri), who abandoned him as a child. Now married to a good-natured trucking company owner, Chiyoko cheerily welcomes Kenji & his hanger-ons into her life as if nothing ever happened. Kenji finds himself working in the truck yard alongside a ragtag crew, including Goro (Odagiri Joe) & Kozue (Miyazaki Aoi), all hiding from problems of their own. The trucking company is a sanctuary for the many who work there, but Kenjis arrival gradually throws things into violent imbalance.
