During the later years of the Japanese occupation, traditional Korean music was challenged by the early pop scene influenced by American jazz & Japanese enka. Gisaengs, the holdovers from the Joseon dynasty, played an important role in protecting the fading culture of traditional music. Directed by Park Heung Sik ( Memories of the Sword), the period drama Love, Lies stars Han Hyo Ju ( The Beauty Inside) & Chun Woo Hee ( Han Gong Ju) as two aspiring gisaengs who get entangled in a love triangle with a pop songwriter played by Yoo Yeon Seok ( The Royal Tailor).
So Yul (Han Hyo Ju) is a talented gisaeng who aims to become a famous entertainer. At the gisaeng school, she meets Yeon Hee (Chun Woo Hee), who was sold to the school by her father, & the two soon become friends. Su Yuls longtime beau Yoon Woo (Yoo Yeon Seok) is a charming pop songwriter. Though he promised to write a song for So Yul, he is enchanted by Yeon Hees voice. He decides to dedicate his song to Yeon Hee & helps her debut as a pop singer. Consumed by jealousy, So Yul vows to take revenge on Yeon Hee for what she has lost.
