Writer-director Derek Yee puts the spotlight on the faces in the background in the comedy-drama I Am Somebody, casting no-name extras to play bit actors & extras trying to catch a break. The film is set in Chinas Hengdian World Studios, the worlds largest film studio & the shooting locale of countless Chinese period productions. Audiences are introduced to the world of Chinawood through the eyes of bumbling country boy Peng (Wang Guopeng), who arrives in Hengdian with nothing to his name besides an earnest desire to become an actor. From there, he befriends fellow wannabe thespians with dreams & disillusions of their own, & gradually learns the ropes of life as an extra at Hengdian, from survival know-how to working protocol, in the process offering a slice-of-life insiders look into acting & filmmaking in all its scrappy glory.
