Estranged from his father since a young age, Malaysian director Lau Kek Huat traveled to Taiwan to study filmmaking, & then returned home with a camera in search of answers. Lau traced back his family history from his absent father to his taboo grandfather, who passed away at the young age of 29 after joining Malaysias Communist movement. Laus grandmother never talks about her late husb&, & not a single photo of him remains. To find out what inspired his grandfather to sacrifice everything in the name of revolution, Lau set out from Malaysia to Guangzhou, Hong Kong & Thailand to talk to other former Communist party members of his grandfathers generation. His journey into his family history & a buried chapter of Malaysian history is documented in Absent Without Leave.
