On January 20, 2009, a violent clash broke out in the neighborhood of Yongsan, Seoul, between the riot police & tenants protesting forced eviction for urban redevelopment. In a last-ditch effort, some fifty demonstrators had occupied the rooftop of a building slated for demolition to protest against the inadequate compensation for lost homes & businesses. One day after the occupation began, a swat team was sent in to crack down on the protest. Fire broke out during the ensuing scuffle, leading to the deaths of five demonstrators & one police officer. The surviving demonstrators battle continued in court where they faced criminal charges.
The incident, which came to be known as the "e; Yongsan Tragedy, "e; rocked Korean society & sparked debates about the legal system, the use of police force, the fallout of urban redevelopment & human rights issues.
