Product Description

Kore-eda Hirokazus Shoplifters won the Palme d Or at the 71st Cannes Film Festival, making it the first Japanese film to take the festivals prestigious top prize in over two decades. The auteurs socially conscious humanist drama revolves around a family of petty thieves formed by Like Father, Like Sons Lily Franky, indie darling Ando Sakura (100 Yen Love), Matsuoka Mayu ( Tremble All You Want), child actor Kairi Jo & legendary late actress Kiki Kirin. The arrival of a new member causes their fragile bonds to gradually unravel in this poignant examination of what makes up a family. Shoplifters swept the top prizes at the 42nd Japan Academy Prize including Best Film, Best Director, Best Screenplay, Best Actress, Best Supporting Actress, Best Cinematography, Best Lighting & Best Music.

Shifty father Osamu (Lily Franky) works in construction & regularly goes shoplifting with young Shota (Kairi Jo). His wife Nobuyo (Ando Sakura) swipes things at the laundromat, grandma Hatsue (Kiki Kirin) plays too much pachinko, & Aki (Matsuoka Mayu) moonlights at a peep show. One cold night, Osamu & Shota find a little girl (Sasaki Miyu) locked out of her home & freezing in the streets. They bring her back to their bustling nest where they discover marks of abuse on her body. The girl seems in no rush to go home, & her parents dont try to find her. Despite the familys already tough circumstances, they decide to keep her & give her a new name. However, one day, the parents finally report her disappearance to the police, putting the family & their many secrets at risk of exposure.
