Japanese director/actor Kitano Takeshi ( Battle Royale) finds himself back at the forefront of both domestic & international film worlds with Zatoichi! The film had its international premiere at the 60th Venice Film Festival in 2003, where it garnered the Silver Lion award for Best Director, & won the Peoples Choice Award at the Toronto Film Festival.
Based on one of Japans most famous film characters, the movie tells the story of a blind masseur/master swordsman named Zatoichi. Wandering into a town ruled by corrupt officials & a gang of rough mobsters, he comes across a samurai named Hattori (Asano Tadanobu), who is working for the mobsters in order to pay for treatment for his ailing wife. His circle of friends widens when he strikes up a relationship with the beautiful sisters Osei & Okinu, who pretend to be dancers as they plot their revenge for the murder of their parents. As the story progresses, the tension builds gradually to a boiling head, exploding in a fantastic toe-tapping ending that will leave you longing for multiple viewings!
