The Founding of an Army begins in the spring of 1927 when conservative Nationalist forces began carrying out violent suppressions of Communist party members in Shanghai & other cities. The purges effectively ended the tenuous United Front alliance between the Nationalists & Communists, & created open divisions in the KMT between Chiang Kai-shek & other party factions. In response to the purges, Communists & like-minded revolutionaries, under the planning & leadership of Zhou Enlai, launched a military insurrection on August 1, 1927, known as the Nanchang Uprising. This date marks the founding of the Peoples Liberation Army & the beginning of all-out civil war.
