After making a foray into drama with A Scene at the Sea, Kitano Takeshi returned to the yakuza genre for his fourth directorial effort Sonatine, which screened in the Un Certain Regard sidebar of the 1993 Cannes Film Festival. Kitano himself stars in the dark & violent film as jaded gangster Murakawa who gets sent to Okinawa by his boss to mediate a minor dispute between two other yakuza clans. Murakawa suspects the mission may be a setup &, sure enough, he & his men get ambushed. While laying low at a seaside house, the men amuse themselves with dangerous games, & Murakawa befriends a local woman. But the brief interim of peace is soon disrupted by the appearance of an assassin.
