Bringing a classic story to television screens once more, 2006 TBS drama
...To celebrate its 40th anniversary, Kadokawa Pictures revisited one of the studios most famous films: Sailor Suit & Machine Gun. In 1981, Akagawa Jiros classic pulp novel about a schoolgirl yakuza boss was adapted into a blockbuster hit starring Yakushimaru Hiroko that is remembered as one of the most iconic Japanese films of the eighties. The novel also inspired two TV dramas in 1982 & 2006 starring Harada Tomoyo & Nagasawa Masami, respectively. In 2016, teen singer-actress Hashimoto Kanna ( Assassination Classroom) steps into the famous role of Hoshi Izumi in Sailor Suit & Machine Gun: Graduation, a spiritual sequel to the original story directed by Maeda Koji ( Till Death Do Us What?). Co-starring Ando Masanobu ( Gonin Saga) & Hasegawa Hiroki ( Shin Godzilla), the crime thriller lives up to its predecessor by combining coming-of-age tropes with pulpy violence.
Hoshi Izumi (Hashimoto Kanna) may look like your average high school girl, but she is actually the leader of the Medaka yakuza clan. She inherited the role after her uncles death, but the gang has since disbanded as part of a peace pact with the rival Hamaguchi gang. Izumi & her three loyal lieutenants now run a cafe together in relative peace as she looks forward to graduation. However, Izumi soon discovers that another yakuza clan with designs on the turf is dealing a dangerous new drug & luring girls into the sex trade through a fake modeling agency. To protect her friends & hometown, Izumi must revive the Medaka once more.
