In the 1960s, China Drama Academy, a Peking Opera school run by Yu Jim Yuen, was the childhood home & training grounds of many of Hong Kongs future action luminaries, including Jackie Chan, Sammo Hung, Yuen Biao, Corey Yuen & Yuen Wah. Directed by Alex Law ( An Autumns Tale), the 1988 Hong Kong classic Painted Faces is based on the true story of Yu Jim Yuen & his famous pupils. The film swept six awards at the 25th Golden Horse Film Awards, including Best Film, Best Director & Best Original Screenplay.
Stepping into the role of his teacher, Sammo Hung won Best Actor at the 8th Hong Kong Film Awards & the 33rd Asia Pacific Film Festival for his portrayal of the stern Master Yu, who persevered through tough conditions to teach acrobatics, martial arts & opera to the children left in his care. Under Master Yus strict training, the young members of the Seven Little Fortunes troupe would grow up, take stage & eventually bring their talents to the film industry.
