In the 19th century, the Edo shogunate faces an unprecedented crisis with the arrival of the black ships of U.S. Commodore Matthew Perry. Japan is forced to open its ports to Western powers & demarcate its borders with Russia. Determined to protect Japans northernmost region from Russia, explorer Matsuura Takeshiro (Matsumoto Jun) sets out to conduct surveys of the most remote terrains with the help of the indigenous Ainu people.
