Chang Cheh (1923-2002) has made more than 100 films in his filming career which spans over 40 years. Establishing a unique aesthetics of violence & masculinity in Hong Kong action cinema, Chang has also groomed a generation of action stars like Ti Lung, Jimmy Wang, & Alexander Fu. In Men from the Monastery (1974), Chang appoints two of his greatest actors, Chan Kuan Tai & Alexander Fu, to star as the legendary kung fu heroes Hung Hei Koon & Fong Sai Yuk, two characters that were later portrayed by Jet Li in the 1990s in The New Legend of Shaolin & Fong Sai Yuk. Secular disciples of the Shaolin Temple who are loyal to the dying Ming Dynasty, Hung & Fong face persecution from another martial arts school that is helping the Manchurians conquer the Ming court.
