In 1997, American-born Chinese writer Iris Chang authored & published The Rape of Nanking: The Forgotten Holocaust of World War II based on her research on the atrocities committed in Nanking & her parents firsthand experiences. The book became an international bestseller & was instrumental in raising awareness in the world about what happened in 1937, when Japanese imperial forces invaded Nanking (nowadays romanized as Nanjing) & raped, tortured, & slaughtered hundreds of thousands of Chinese people.
In 2007, the 70th anniversary of the Nanking Massacre, Torontos "e; Association for Learning & Preserving the History of WWII in Asia"e; sent a crew to China, Japan, Canada, & the United States to gather material in order to turn the book & its late authors life into a documentary. Costing C$1.5 million & taking 15 months to make, the documentary combines precious archival material with interviews with victims & survivors to offer viewers a truthful account of one of the darkest chapters of world history that no one should forget.
