The Old Fashioned Greengage is named after Sir William Gage who imported the variety into the UK in 1724 & it has certainly stood the test of time. It is widely considered to be the best plum for flavour & is always at its best when picked fresh from the tree. It was described by a Victorian fruit enthusiast named Robert Hogg as being “ Tender melting & very juicy with a rich sugary & most delicious flavour”. It will produce pale yellow-green fruits in late summer & will create a beautiful focal point in any garden.
