The October War or Yom Kippur" War of 1973 was precipitated by the Arab states of the Middle East primarily Egypt & Syria in an attempt to force Israel to the negotiating table. The carefully coordinated attacks launched by Egypt & Syria in the Sinai & on the Golan Heights respectively achieved complete tactical surprise. This work details the Syrian assault on the strategically vital Golan Heights." ...

' Yomping' was revealed by the journalist Charles Laurence in 1982 as the word which the Royal Marines used to describe carrying heavy loads long distances on foot. Given the intense public interest in the dramatic events then unfolding in the South Atlantic it caught on & is now in common usage. The Yompers is the first account to be written by a company commander who fought in the Falklands War. Called to action from their beds early on 2 April 1982 the author along with the rest of 45 Commando Royal Marines sailed 8 000 miles to play a key role in the recovery of the Falkland Islands from Argentine occupation. Lacking helicopters & short of food they 'yomped' in appalling weather carrying overloaded rucksacks across ground which threatened to break legs & ankles at every step. Despite extreme hardship their morale & training ensured they remained a cohesive fighting-fit body of men. They went on to fight the crucial night battle for Two Sisters the twin 1 000 foot high peaks which were keys to the defensive positions around Stanley. The author paints an illuminating picture of the Royal Marines Commandos at war. Gritty & moving & at moments wryly amusing The Yompers provides penetrating original first-hand insights into wider aspects of the Falklands War as well as conflict in general. ...

1930s America southern high society: Part love story part coming-of-age novel this is the moving raw & exquisitely vivid story of an uncommon girl navigating a treacherous road to womanhood. Thea Atwell is fifteen years old in 1930 when following a scandal for which she has been held responsible she is 'exiled' from her wealthy & isolated Florida family to a debutante boarding school in the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina. As Thea grapples with the truth about her role in the tragic events of 1929 she finds herself enmeshed in the world of the Yonahlossee Riding Camp with its complex social strata ordered by money beauty & equestrienne prowess; where young women are indoctrinated in the importance of 'female education' yet expected to be married by twenty-one; a world so rarified as to be rendered immune (at least on the surface) to the Depression looming at the periphery all overseen by a young headmaster who has paid a high price for abandoning his own privileged roots... ...

The foundations of Yorks commercial identity lie in the powerful medieval guilds that controlled & organised business development here until the nineteenth century. The book will give todays York residents a unique picture of how their city was as well as those who used to live or work here. Confectionery giants Rowntrees Terrys & Cravens are depicted & described as are other lesser known firms like Cooke Troughton & Simms.
