The history of health care is complex confusing & contested. It involves more than just the creation of hospitals & dispensaries infirmaries & health centers. There are also royal colleges trades unions medical schools nurses homes coroners courts nursing sisterhoods ambulance stations patients organizations medical missions... Usually to enhance our understanding we sit & read books or nowadays surf the Internet. But its more fun to go out visit the buildings where events unleaded & transport yourself back in time. The story of how health care has developed from medieval times to the present day is told through seven walks in central London each with a key theme: Competition between the Church Crown & City for control Changing fortunes of particular districts Radical reform between 1840 & 1880 Individual creativity & entrepreneurship Hospitals unavoidable choice between merger or migration Transformation of health care trades into professions Development of primary care The book takes as much interest in one of the six ambulance stations build in 1915 by the London County Council as it does in the grandest teaching hospital. Although some important buildings have been destroyed & others are threatened many remain. The walks aim to help preserve our legacy as increasingly former health care buildings are converted into hotels offices homes & shops. Awareness of their original function is in danger of being lost. The book also aims to increase our understanding of the current challenges we face in trying to improve health care. For there are many lessons to be learnt from the past. Packed full of curious & surprising facts about medicine & beautifully illustrated with maps photographs & images this is the perfect guide book for anyone with a passion for urban walks the history of London & of course medicine. ...

Walking Tall

He is 6ft 7in tall but Peter Crouchs height is not the only thing that makes the Liverpool and England striker different: he has a football story like no other player in the modern game. Crouch has risen from humble beginnings at non-league Dulwich Hamlet on loan to be an England striker and the first to score ten international goals in a calendar year. His career has not been the smooth journey from teen prodigy to Premiership star enjoyed by so many of his England team-mates. Booed by England fans in October 2005 Crouch had the same supporters on their feet with a hat-trick for his country eight months later. WALKING TALL is about a footballer who has always found himself under intense scrutiny - for the way he looks as much as his ability on the pitch. Crouchs story is also about his
constant battle to win over the doubters. He talks about the managers who have backed him - as well as those who have written him off - and relives the pain of rejection at Aston Villa contrasted with the elation of his GBP7 million transfer to Liverpool just one year later in the summer of 2005. Crouch was a key figure in Englands 2006 World Cup campaign and in WALKING TALL he talks about his famous robot dance as well as the goals and the disappointments of that summer in Germany. For Crouch the journey continues under Rafael Benitez at Anfield and with Fabio Capellos England team. Funny honest and open WALKING TALL is the story of an unlikely hero.
