From fervent pleas for provincial preservation to humoresques on eccentric vicars & his own personal demons Betjemans talks combined wit nostalgia & criticism in a way that touched the soul of his listeners from the 1930s to the 1950s. Now collected in book form for the first time his broadcasts represent one of the most compelling archives of twentieth-century broadcasting reawakening the modern reader to Betjemans unique perspective & the compelling magic of the golden age of wireless.

In the words of Alexander Mc Call Smith: You feel the rocking of the train you hear the sound of its wheels on the rails; you are in the world rather than suspended somewhere above it. & sometimes there are conversations to be had which is what the overarching story in this collection is all about. It is a simple device: people brought together entertain one another with tales of what happened to them on trains. It takes place on a journey I frequently make myself & know well the journey between Edinburgh & London. It is best read on a train preferably that one. ...

Trains Of The Isle Of Man

Transport features of the Isle of Man is the collective title for a series of books presenting a photographic record of various modes of transport to from and in the Isle of Man as recorded by a number of writers living on the island and seen from an island perspective. This is the first book to be produced in the series and it documents in pictures the twilight years of the operation of the Isle of Man Railway under the original company which had started running in 1873. The author of the book is perhaps best known for his photographs of shipping rather than railways although he has been taking photographs of the island's railways for over 50 years. Here he presents some unusual photographs of the steam railway taken in the late 1950s up to the time that the railway was leased to an
independent operator in 1967. The period between then and modern times will be the subject of two further publications in the series.
