Like bubonic plague & stone cladding no-one took Margaret Thatcher seriously until it was too late. Her first act as leader was to appear before the cameras & do a V for Victory sign the wrong way round. She was smiling & telling the British people to f*** off at the same time. It was something we would have to get used to.' Things Can Only Get Better is the personal account of a Labour supporter who survived eighteen miserable years of Conservative government. It is the heartbreaking & hilarious confessions of someone who has been actively involved in helping the Labour party lose elections at every level: school candidate: door-to-door canvasser: working for a Labour MP in the House of Commons; standing as a council candidate; & eventually writing jokes for a shadow cabinet minister. Along the way he slowly came to realise that Michael Foot would never be Prime Minister that vegetable quiche was not as tasty as chicken tikki masala & that the nuclear arms race was never going to be stopped by face painting alone. ...

The inspiration for this series of reflections initially came from Tim O Briens collection of short stories reflecting on his time in Vietnam called The Things They Carried". In these stories we dont just hear about the physical things that the soldiers carry but also their terrors & dreams. The author has taken this idea & applied it to the Passion focussing on the things that Jesus carried: not just the cross itself but the crown of thorns he was forced to wear the seamless robe that was taken from him the other burdens that we laid upon him & also the hopes & fears that he carried in his heart & that are reflected in the different passion narratives. The idea was further developed for the 2006 Good Friday Three Hours service at St Pauls Cathedral & it is these reflections that have now been expanded & developed into this book. Suitable for Lenten study either for groups or individuals the engagingly written meditations will have a life beyond Lent & will bear repeated reading." ...
