It is a summer's night in 1860. In an elegant detached Georgian house in the village of Road Wiltshire all is quiet. Behind shuttered windows the Kent family lies sound asleep. At some point after midnight a dog barks. The family wakes the next morning to a horrific discovery: an unimaginably gruesome murder has taken place in their home. The household reverberates with shock not least because the guilty party is surely still among them. Jack Whicher of Scotland Yard the most celebrated detective of his day reaches Road Hill House a fortnight later. He faces an unenviable task: to solve a case in which the grieving family are the suspects. The murder provokes national hysteria. The thought of what might be festering behind the closed doors of respectable middle-class homes
- scheming servants rebellious children insanity jealousy loneliness & loathing
- arouses fear & a kind of excitement. But when Whicher reaches his shocking conclusion there is uproar & bewilderment. A true story that inspired a generation of writers such as Wilkie Collins Charles Dickens & Arthur Conan Doyle this has all the hallmarks of the classic murder mystery
- a body; a detective; a country house steeped in secrets. In The Suspicions of Mr Whicher Kate Summerscale untangles the facts behind this notorious case bringing it back to vivid extraordinary life.

Think of Sussex Buses & almost automatically that means Southdown: think of locations & that means Brighton. Well you will find plenty of pictures of both within these pages but there is much more besides. Although Southdown was far & away the biggest cheese in Sussex three other BET concerns Aldershot & District Maidstone & District & East Kent worked into the county as did London Transport. Trams operated beside the seaside in Brighton & Hastings their systems & the little four-wheel cars which operated them being replaced by almost silent streamlined (well perhaps not the early Hastings ones) trolleybuses in the 1930s. Eastbourne was the worlds first municipality to operate motorbuses
- applause please. Brighton ah Brighton deserves a new chapter. Not only did Brighton Corporation operate trams then trolleybuses & motor buses but the town was also served by Thomas Tillings Brighton & Hove & District which was eventually swallowed up by Southdown. In NBC days the Corporation misguidedly adopted a pale blue livery which like the NBC green did not wear very well. Privatisation saw the emergence of the Brighton Hove Bus & Coach Company which would by the mid first decade of the 21st century become the jewel in the crown that Southdown had once assumed. With routes spreading far beyond the City of Brighton & Hove some of them once operated by Southdown notably to Lewes Tunbridge Wells & Eastbourne a livery of basically red & pale cream & thus recalling days gone by but designed by Ray Stennings Best Impressions & thus totally of the 21st century buses named after notable Brighton inhabitants ranging from world famous statesmen & stars of stage screen & radio to good men & women who have enhanced in various ways the lives of their fellow citizens all part of an imaginative publicity drive which has seen the graph of the growth of bus travel in the city climb steadily & reap a number of well deserved awards.

The East Sussex" volume of " The Buildings of England" covers an area ranging from the High Weald in the north of the county to the massive ridge of the South Downs & the resort towns & ancient ports of the coast. Its coastal resorts are particularly distinguished none more so than Brighton & Hove where John Nash's oriental Pavilion for the Prince Regent sets the tone. Elsewhere castles at Camber Bodiam & fortified town walls at Rye & Winchelsea attest to its military past & Battle Abbey to its medieval endowments. The towns & villages are especially rich in timber-framed brick & tile houses for which the county is famous. The twentieth century makes its mark in the exhilarating De La Warr Pavilion at Bexhill & the uncompromising forms of the 1960s University of Sussex campus." ...

The summer of 1939 saw one of the most exciting archaeological finds ever dug from British soil an undisturbed Anglo-Saxon ship burial at Sutton Hoo near Woodbridge in Suffolk. The ship nearly 30m long had been dragged uphill from the estuary of the River Deben to a royal gravefield & buried beneath a large circular mound. Amidships in a textile-hung chamber a sumptous burial was laid out unique in its glittering wealth of jewellery & unrivalled in the variety of objects that had been selected to represent every facet of the dead mans life. Gold & garnet jewellery silver from the eastern Mediterranean drinking vessels with silver gilt fittings a magnificent helmet & parade shield a lyre & sceptre were amongst the spectacular finds excavated in two hectic weeks just before the outbreak of World War II. Although no remains of a body survived & no personal possessions were found the gold & garnet regalia alone implied that the burial was that of a king. But his identity remained elusive until research resulted in a date of 625/30 for the latest of a collection of small gold coins found in the ship suggest that it may have been the grave of Raedwald king of East Anglia who died in 624/5. In this new edition of the survey first published in 1986 the excavation of the ship & its contents are described & illustrated & the results of many years research at the British Museum are summarised. It also brings the story right up-to-date &

The landing at Suvla Bay part of the August Offensive commenced on the night of 6 August 1915. It was intended to support a breakout from Anzac Beach. Despite early hopes from a largely unopposed landing Suvla was a mismanaged affair that quickly became a stalemate. The newly formed IX Corps commanded by Lieutenant General Sir Frederick Stopford failed not for lack of sacrifice of its New Army & Territorials but for failure of generalship. Opportunities were thoughtlessly wasted due to lethargy. Suvla not only signalled the end of Stopford & many of his Brigadiers but also saw the end of the Commander in Chief Sir Ian Hamilton. It was the beginning of the end of the Gallipoli gamble & in its own right created a catalyst of disaster that would come to represent the failed campaign. This book adds to the Gallipoli story by recounting the Suvla Bay landing through a mix of official accounts intertwined with a rich collection of the participants letters diaries personal accounts photographs & maps. ...
