Clive King's Stig of the Dump" is a much-loved modern classic. " Stig of the Dump" is 50 years old & the story of Barney & his best friend cave-man Stig is as fresh today as it was when first published. Barney is a solitary little boy given to wandering off by himself. One day he is lying on the edge of a disused chalk-pit when it gives way & he lands in a sort of cave. Here he meets 'somebody with a lot of shaggy hair & two bright black eyes' wearing a rabbit skin & speaking in grunts. He names him Stig. Of course nobody believes Barney when he tells his family all about Stig but for Barney cave-man Stig is totally real. They become great friends learning each others ways & embarking on a series of unforgettable adventures. This book is a wonderful " Puffin Modern Classic". Clive King was born in Richmond Surrey in 1924. When he was young his family moved to a village called Ash near Sevenoaks in Kent which is the setting for " Stig of the Dump". He went to Downing College Cambridge & the School of Oriental & African Studies in London. He then served in the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve. His service as a sailor & his work as a language teacher took him all over the world. Clive King lives with his family in Norfolk & is a full-time writer. Other titles by Clive King: " Hamid of Aleppo"; " The Town that Went South"; " The 22 Letters"; " The Night the Water Came"; " Snakes & Snakes"; " Me & My Million"; " The Inner Ring" series; " The Devil's Cut"; " Ninny's Boat"; " The Sound of propellors"; " The Seashore People"; "A Touch of Class Other Puffin Modern Classics: Charlie & the Chocolate Factory"; " Goodnight Mr Tom"; " The Hundred-Mile-an-Hour Dog"; " Artemis Fowl"; " Charlotte's Webb"; " The Family from One End Street"; " The Worst Witch"; " George's Marvelous Medicine"; " The Sheep-Pig"; "A Dog so Small"; " The Diary of a Killer Cat"; " Mrs Frisby & the Rats of NIMH"; " Roll of Thunder Hear My Cry"; " Carrie's War"." ...

The official biography of Top Gear"s tame racing driver from the early years to present day. The Stig is known to millions as " Top Gear"s tame racing driver famed for his skillful driving & his legendary reluctance to speak. Other details of his life are the subject of much speculation yet almost nothing of any substance is known about the man behind the visor. Where did he come from? What is his motivation? Did he really once punch a horse to the ground? Simon du Marche (" Princess Margaret -- Gin & Gentility"; " Keith Chegwin -- Tears of An Idiot") has devoted over two years to getting inside that trademark white helmet. He has pursued The Stig -- sometimes literally -- in a relentless quest to unearth the truth & now at last his findings can be revealed. Through extensive research & in-depth interviews with celebrities motorsport experts & " Top Gear "presenters Jeremy Clarkson Richard Hammond & James May du Marche has built up an unprecedented picture of what lies beneath the white suit. His quest threw up many questions: can Stig-like characters really be seen in the hieroglyphics of ancient Egypt? Was The Stig present at some of the most pivotal moments in history? Why is a driver of The Stigs considerable ability not in Formula 1? Who was the mysterious figure in white seen leaving Angelina Jolies hotel room? How can anyone not understand how stairs work? Happily these questions -- & many many others -- will be answered in Simon du Marches landmark work " The Stig."" ...

Charlie Croker has & in 2006 he gathered together what he thought was the definitive collection of English language howlers for his bestselling book Lost in Translation". But he reckoned without the great British public. Not only was the book a smash hit it also opened the floodgates to a deluge of emails & letters stuffed full of further mistranslations & mutilated phrases. From a leaflet from the Museum of Rasputin in Russia (which is apparently situated in a house that belonged a pilot fish Zubov) to a song title on a pirated Pink Floyd CD (" Come Fartably Numb") the scrambled sentences just kept flooding in. At the same time Charlie has continued his travels & picked up gems of his own. With such a wealth of material a sequel wasnt just a necessity it was a public service & " Still Lost in Translation" is even more addictive whimsical & side-splittingly hilarious than the first book." ...
